My proposed itinerary includes first day in Switzerland coming from Innsbruck through to Alp Grum, overnight there at station hotel then next day onward to Tirano for lunch then return to St Moritz (Bernina Express), from what I can see the return trains only stop at Alp Grum for a minute or so, not enough time to collect our stored luggage, so I cant get a super saver fare (???)Tirano – St Moritz I am thinking for return I will need a P2P Tirano to St Moritz, stop at Alp Grum go and collect luggage then catch the next train onward to overnight in St Moritz, is this the best way to go, I am thinking Alp Grum would be nice overnight stop for dinner and breakfast. TIA

There is nothing at Alp Grum but a train station and attached accommodation. And when I say nothing, I mean it.

    Hi Tonyw,

there is a restaurant at the same point (closed until 12 Dec 2019). When are you traveling?

I haven’t been/stayed there but according to the pictures the view is beautiful (if the weather is nice). There is just a single building, it is the train station, the accommodation and also the restaurant. Rockoyster did you mean there is nothing under that?

Tonyw, as you are traveling from Austria, check this too, if you haven’t seen it so far: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/austria

I meant nothing more than there was nothing other than a station building and a restaurant/gasthaus. The views might be nice but you could equally be socked in with a blizzard in winter,

For views in May see flickr.com/photos/6400 7154@N00/sets/72157682 761524252 and scroll through until you see the Bernina Express. What the views are like in the dead of winter I can’t say.

BTW the BEX Chur to Tirano stopped for about 15 mins for the photo opportunity. Whether the BEX Tirano to St Moritz does the same l can’t say.

Unrelated but you might tell me, when i buy a super saver ticket Buchs – St Moritz there are 3 connections and trip Zermatt-Murren via laterbrunnen there are 4, I assume there is sufficient time to move from 1 platform to the other so that the ticket remains valid, as we will have luggage (1 large bag each), TIA

If the timetable offers the connections then they are doable. If you miss a connection due to a late train arrival then it is SBB’s fault and they will honour the SS ticket on the subsequent connections. Don’t be too sure you will get Supersaver fares offered on the dates you want to travel. I have noticed recently that there are often supersaver fares for people with half-fare card but NOT if you don’t have a half-fare card. Not saying that will happen to you but just be aware there is a risk.

    Exactly.

I would say that staying in the Alp Grum hotel would be good in summer but not in winter. Stay in a larger place and enjoy the views during the day as you travel.

One of the BEX PE trains (10.07 Tirano – St Moritz which doesn’t run in late Jan) stops for 15 minutes at Alp Grum but the others don’t

Are you certain a Supersaver is best option? The saver day pass can be good value if bought early and you are not restricted to a specific train so you can stop off where you like

Yes its only few sf’s difference in some routes, but we be lugging around big suitcase, so stopping off for a bit in some places means we got to do something with the suitcase, some days a point to point works ok as well.
