Hello! We are headed to Switzerland in September 2020. I am trying to find a date for the Hasliberg Mountain Festival – Dividing of the Cheese. Can anyone point me to a website (or dates) where I can find out more about this festival? It seems that Hasliberg is a municipality of four villages – not a town in and of itself. If anyone has been to the festival, I would love to hear insights such as activities, crowd size, etc. In general, what is the best web resource for searching out small local festivals?

This site says the date has yet to be announced for the Dividing of the Cheese (Chästeilet) at Hasliberg.

Thank you for your responses. Slowpoke, I am interested in Hasliberg, not Haslital. Like rockoyster, I had found mention of this fest on the myswitzerland website, with no date listed. Rockoyster, thank you for the interlaken website. That is a very good one for local festivals. I am also staying in the Valais region and would appreciate any localized website similar to Interlaken if you happen to know of any.
Hasliberg is in Haslital area.

Slowpoke asked me about this festival. Over the years, I have been there many times. It is usually in the early fall below the hotel/restaurant at Maegisalp. Much Swissness with alphorns, dancers in local costume, food, and farmer stands to sell (and sample) the local cheeses. Easy walk to the site from the cable cars. The tourist office in Meiringen will have dates for you. I would guess mid-September.

Thank you, Fred, for the extra details that help paint a picture of the event. Thanks for your info, Steph. Unfortunately, we won’t be in the area for the Stechelberg. With a link from Rockoyster, I found a cheese festival in Justistal on Sept 18 so I will get to attend at least one. When looking at the myswitzerland.com events list, I see a Cheese and Bell Fest on Sept 19 in Saanen. Does anyone know anything about this? I wonder if it is a very small one as Google maps can’t find Saanen. Thank you! Kay

Thank you, Steph! Unfortunately, we’ll be in Lauterbrunnen and, after mapping it, find that the Cheese and Bell festival will be a bit too far for us. Especially since we can go to Justistal Chästeilet the previous day. I sure appreciate your info which helps make decisions. ~Kay

Ggogle Maps is a generally useful map, but for travel in Switzerlad, particularly, for using train and public transport travel, this map is much more useful.
I can promise you that it will find Saanen. 😉
There is a lot of useful stuff in the menus, but one feature in particular that I like is the way that the train lines pop into visibility as you zoom in more than zoom level 32 ( the number at the end of the URL.)

PS -In German, “das Tal” means “the valley.” Der Berg means “the mountain.”
Thank you for finding Saanen for me. It now appears to be about an hour from Lauterbrunnen. Maybe the festival will be possible depending on everything else we might schedule to see or do. That map is great. I tried to display hiking paths (even zoomed to 32) but I suspect these items are not displayed because the map is showing winter and they don’t exist at the moment (as Google does). I used the SBB website…linked from this informative page on how to use it…

to learn that Saanen is about 2 hours 40 minutes from Lauterbrunnen.

PS – Sarnen is in the opposite direction…towards Luzern ……about 2 hours.
I don’t know if the time will be less by driving or not but we will have a car. Two hours by train or car will be too much, especially when there is so much to see and to in the BO. Thanks! ~Kay

1 hour and 26 minutes by car, according to Google maps.
The train route does have some connections which add about 1/2 hour to the actual time on the trains.

Yes, Slowpoke, we have car-fully considered and weighed the difference between renting a car and going by train. For us, for this trip, we decided on a car. We’re considering purchasing the Swiss Half Fare card in addition. If we get the opportunity to take another trip to Switzerland, we might not use a car but we’ll cross that alp later. We’ve driven on all of our trips and have always been glad that we did so. I might say the same thing if we’d gone by train. Thank you for providing that link to all the pros and cons…and we reserve the right to make a change!
