Hi, I am planning on driving from UK to Switzerland in June to visit family in Heerbrugg. I have planned my route going via Strasbourg. I would like to ask for suggestions for the return journey. I am aiming to stop somewhere on the way to Calais. Thanks

I have travelled by car between England and Switzerland by car approximately 150 times in my 61 years! I do not generally go via Strasbourg (for historical reasons I won’t bore you with) however I did go that way in October 2021 (via the cheaper route avoiding the A4 toll beyond Reims) ie Calais – Reims (A26) – Vitry le Francois (N4) – Nancy – Strasbourg, then down through Alsace to Mulhouse and Basel (worth stopping in the wine villages around Obernai etc)

The usual ‘family’ route (if going to eastern Switzerland) is a little bit more cross country Reims – Troyes – Langres – Vesoul – Belfort – Basel, but another variation is Reims – Vitry le Francois – Nancy – Epinal – Remiremont – Col de Bussang – Mulhouse – Basel. Yet another is Nancy – St Die – Col du Bonhomme – Colmar

Another tip: to avoid the complicated routes through the centre of Basel, you can dive into Germany so you would go: Colmar – Mulhouse – A36 Ottmarsheim – German route 5 tio junction 68 Dreieck Weil am Rhein, then turn East following signs to Rheinfelden (which has a half a town in Germany and half in Switzerland. Cross the Rhein river and the border there then turn East onto Swiss motorway A3

Thanks for replying and giving ne an idea of what’s involved. I will certainly look into the suggested route.

I was after a route for the return journey to the UK. I am looking at going via Luxembourg to Calais.
