    Dear Sir/Madam,

I have an Eurail Italy pass. I wanted to travel from Milan to Zurich.

There is an EC directly from Milan to Zurich. But the section from Milan to Chiasso required seat reservation and need to pay 12 Euro. From Chiasso to Zurich no reservation is required in EC train.

I have booked the ticket via SBB from Chiasso to Zurich with an EC train. This is consider settled.

Milan to Chiasso I will use Eurail Italy to cover this trip. I pick an RE train in order to avoid the seat reservation of Eurocity train.

The problem is the crossing border from Italy to Switzerland. Last station is Como St. Giovani Italy and first station in Switzerland is Chiasso.

Question 1: Can i use Eurail italy to cover my trip from Milan up to Chiasso? Is this valid? From Chiasso i will then use my SBB one way ticket and ride an EC train.

If not, please advise the correct way to book.

    Regards,

    Stanley

Chiasso is the border station, train crews change in Chiasso. Hence, your Eurail is valid as far as Chiasso.

Beware, depending on the season, Eurocity trains are fully booked; there is a risk that you are not allowed to board the EC for safety reasons in the Gotthard Base Tunnel. If so, the blue screen on the platform will read “With reservation only”.

    Hi Stanley,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes, the Eurail pass is valid on the train from Milan to Chiasso. And travel on the EC train from Chiasso to Zurich should be fine if you have purchased a valid ticket: https://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

    Regards,

    Anna
