Hello Melodi,
You can read all about the difference between 1st and 2nd class in the below link. (Just so you are aware, some mountain (cogwheel) trains, buses and the trams in the urban areas, only offer one class).
(I think first class anywhere is always lovely ;-))
Kind regards,
Yolanda

Hi Melodi
Welcome
We always happy to travel second class, but always buy an upgrade to first class when taking a boat trip as we like to sit on the top deck.
Second class can get crowded at peak times (work/school journey times) on certain trains and the likelihood of that is indicated on the timetable on the SBB app.
Hope this is of help.
Jane

I think a decision might also be impacted based on whether you are taking 1 or more of the panoramic trains (Glacier Express, Bernina Express, etc.). First class on those trains seems like a great experience and I am looking forward to it. Although, you can also get 2nd class passes, and upgrade at the station, if desired, for one or more of the trains. I am going to be traveling solo for my trip, so I am going to get a 1st class pass because I want to sit in first class where they have seats that are not in a group of 4. Most 2nd class trains have 2 seats on each side of the aisle. Most first class have 1 seat on one side and 2 seats on the other side. I will be sitting on the 1-seat side. With your party of 4, however, that won’t matter so much since you will likely all want to sit in a group-of-4 cluster. I will be sitting with only one other person, if they happen to reserve the other seat in my cluster.
