Lots of free Lucerne day trips with the Swiss Travel Pass

The Swiss Travel Pass (and Swiss Travel Pass Flex) work very well in the Lucerne area. They include a lot of things to do for free. Not only well-known trips like the cogwheel train to Mount Rigi, but lots of hidden gems too!

If good alpine scenery and saving money are your priorities, I advise considering the excursions below. They are easy (half) day trips from Lucerne, and all free with the Swiss Travel Pass. Watch the above video for all details.

  1. Klewenalp (Lake Lucerne views)
  2. Stockhütte (Lake Lucerne views)
  3. Bürgenstock by bus (Lake Lucerne views)
  4. Stoos (funicular and cableway)
  5. Zugerberg (views of Lake Zug and Lake Ägeri)
  6. Stanserhorn (Lake Lucerne views)
  7. Lake Lucerne, Lake Zurich, and Lake Zug boat trips
  8. Mount Rigi by cogwheel train and cableway
  9. Emmental train between Lucerne and Bern through rural Central Switzerland
  10. Uetliberg for a view of Zurich city and Lake Zurich
  11. Gotthard classic route (avoid the new long tunnel for the best scenery)
  12. Voralpen-Express from Lucerne to St. Gallen across a pre-alpine landscape
  13. Ristis at Engelberg
  14. GoldenPass line to Interlaken or even further
  15. Seelisberg (Lake Lucerne views)

Page author: ArnoI have visited Switzerland countless times since 1997. I've explored most of the country, but find myself staying in the Bernese Oberland and Graubünden most frequently. The alps and the rail network remain very impressive, even after all these years.
