Boat tickets versus passes
Point to point boat tickets can be purchased through the timetable, as well as at nearby rail stations or boat docks. However, in most cases people traveling in Switzerland are better off with a rail pass. Most of these passes are actually "public transport passes" and also cover boats. Some passes cover boats for free, so you don't need a ticket. Other passes offer a discount, so you need to purchase a discounted boat ticket.
