Sorry to say I have no personal experience with hut hiking here. I would recommend focusing on the Bernese Oberland region for the scenery and be prepared for cold and snow. It is winter now at higher altitudes.

Lucas – for Bernese region, i am thinking now about states 11-14 for “Via Alpa”, and finding the appropriate huts. Would you recommend this?
also, i understand it will be winter, but does that mean it won’t be beautiful?

A wonderful way to beat that quarterlife crisis! Here’s a few things to take into account:
- The best season for hut to hut hikes is July to September. October is risky because there might be snow on higher terrain, as Lucas said. Snow on such routes is simply dangerous unless you are equipped for it, experienced, and know your way around. It makes the trails slippery or even inaccessible, and it will be hard to find your way. So in any case be sure to have an alternative route, either by public transport or on foot, if a leg is snow covered.
- 20 miles/32 km per day is extreme for hut to hut hikes. There will be a lot of vertical meters to cover too. Think 3 dimensional! Normally just half of that distance takes a full day. And you need to be sure to reach your lodging well before sunset.
- I think you mean the Via Alpina, right? The stages of the green route you have in mind are for sure beautiful. But to be avoided with snow. They are hard enough in good weather; do not take risks! You’ll find further details here: http://www.via-alpina.org/en/page/246 /the-green-trail. For huts, check the website Lucas gave you, so you’ll be sure they’re still open.
- If the weather does not allow the route you’ve planned, then take a look at http://www.jakobsweg.ch. That route has many sections in the valley, so less of a challenge weather wise. It might not be what you’re looking for, but it will be very nice as well. And you’ll hopefully be able to come back in summer to explore higher terrain.

I will technically be going in October, and I’ve read plenty about how winter will affect my hut to hut hikes, but I will be going the first week of October from 10/3 through 10/6 for 4 days of hiking. Is the first week of October still risky for bad weather? I would think mid-late October is when the cold weather really picks up… Any input would be appreciated!

There’s a risk for sure, you do need alternatives so you can change your plans last minute. Check for trail conditions with the hut/hotel staff, or the train station/tourist office staff. The highest sections of those routes are already snow covered as we speak. Now this could melt, but you can’t be sure. Even in summer trails at that altitude can get snow for a few hours or days if the weather turns bad. The risk of that increases as fall progresses, but that’s just an average. These routes are absolutely wonderful but not to be underestimated.

In case the weather really is bad an it’s snowing and raining during the time i’m there, I am considering taking the Blue Trail, which is further south, which I imagine would have better relative weather.
That said, what is the Grindelwald, Lauterbrennan of the blue trail? in other words, which hikes are the most beautiful?

Altitude is much more of a factor than latitude. Indeed the southern regions are warmer on average, but an average does not guarantee anything. I would say that terrain above 1500 m can be snow covered in October anywhere in the Swiss Alps, so in the mountains that means you can’t go without someone experienced and the proper gear. If it’s relatively warm there may not even be snow at 2500 m, but things can change overnight.
Note that even the Klausen pass road, which is below 2000 m, is lightly snow covered today. In 2 to 3 weeks from now chances will only increase. I’ve walked in a thick layer of snow at 2600 m (unplanned) in July in the south-east of Switzerland, just to throw in another example 🙂
My recommendation is to prepare for it but don’t assume the route will be safely accessible. Pick lower alternative routes, and check with the locals about the trail status daily. All of Switzerland is beautiful, and it will be more relaxed if you don’t have to worry about safety.
