5 days in Thun – how best to explore the area

Short summary – read this first

Sangsoam and her husband are headed to Switzerland from April 22-30, spending their first night in Geneva after arriving in Zurich. They're looking for tips on visiting the Swiss Tulip Festival, various day trips from their base in Thun, and advice on scenic train routes, aiming for an exciting and efficient itinerary.

Key takeaways:
  • Check the train timetable for travel times to ensure you can accomplish day trips easily.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass offers great benefits, including free entry to Schilthorn and discounts on scenic trains.
  • For scenic train rides, regular trains often cover the same routes as premium lines, so you can choose based on your comfort.
  • Plan for only one major excursion per day to enjoy your trips without feeling rushed.
  • Consider visiting Niesen for fantastic views over Lake Thun.
➤ We can help you plan your Switzerland trip. Save time and avoid mistakes! See how it works.

    Hi Sangsoam-

You asked about the Swiss Tulip Festival.

<<“If we have enough time in the afternoon we would like to see the Swiss Tulip Festival. Is the festival worth seeing?”>>

A fiend of mine in Zürich just sent me this note:

<<“Yesterday, we went to Morges on Lake Geneva, the tulips are lovely in the city park, a real attraction for visitors and – inshallah – we plan another visit next year. What an effort the city of Morges put in, thousands of bulbs had to be planted! A feast for the eyes.”>>

Marvelous. We will have photos of Swiss tulips to send back home. When I said I would visit Swiss tulip festival, my friends laughed and said no one would go to Switzerland for tulips.

Today is a good sunny day. We are taking maggie’s advice: Riding an ER train from Thun to Visp. Now we are on board of a Gotthard line heading to Zermatt and will do Gonergart soon.
