    Hello everyone

We are going on vacation in the Sass Valley in the summer, landing in Zurich and want to combine the train ride to Sass with a trip of a few hours.

We were thinking of purchasing a day-saving ticket and traveling through Lucerne, devoting about 4 hours to a trip to Mount Rigi which includes a boat and from there continuing towards Saas, the problem is the luggage…

I understood that the train stations have lockers for storing luggage, the question is whether this is a safe enough solution?

And even if they are big enough to store the luggage of a family with 4 people who came for a week off?

Thanks for the information and in general for this amazing and important site.

You flight will have to arrive on time to allow you to fit all this in. You also need to confimr which ‘Saas’ it is (not Sass) I assume you mean Saas Fee. If so it will be a long day, but if you can leave Zurich early you can put luggage in store at Luzern main station

Yes, it was a mistake, I mean Sass,

I arrive in Zurich the day before in the evening, want to sleep in Zurich,

leave immediately in the morning for Lucerne, leave the luggage there, then do the combined route on Mount Rigi,

and from there take the train via Bern to Sass.

    We still have ‘Sass’.

Please confirm you mean Saas Fee

OK that’s good. There is no train up the Saas Valley – only buses. Therefore you need to plan carefully to give yourself enough time – especially to give you time to hand in and collect luggage in Luzern on top of the Rigi. I recommend Zurich – Luzern (drop luggage) – Vitznau – Rigi Kulm – Arth Goldau – Luzern (collect luggage) – Bern – Visp – Saas Grund

I was actually thinking of going down on foot a little towards Rigi Kaltbad First and returning via wegis.

I don’t know the option you mentioned via Arth Goldau, if you could expand a little or refer me to a more extended article I would be very grateful.

The cable car to Weggis is modern (only opened in 1968) and travels on the same side of the mountain as the Vitznau – Rigi railway. The classic round trip available since 1873 is Vitznau – Rigi (red train) – Rigi – Arth Goldau (Blue train) , so that you see both sides of the Rigi massif from trains. From Rigi Kaltbad you can descend (with views of the Zugersee) to Arth Goldau on the Gotthard railway, where you change into a direct train to Luzern (take the local S Bahn train via Kussnacht to ensure you see more views of the Lake)

@Davidr1, I have traveled almost yearly to Switzerland since 2012 and use luggage storage every trip as I often want to explore an area where I’m not staying overnight. You’ll want to use the SBB site or the links Yolanda suggested as the number and size of lockers at stations will vary, especially in smaller towns. A large locker will store at least 3 21″ bags as well as a couple of backpacks. Once, in a smaller station that only had small lockers available I just unpacked a few things from our 2 suitcases to flatten them and put those loose in the locker with the suitcases to make it all fit. I’ve even left luggage in the Bellinzona station for the maximum of 2 days while I took a short backpacking trip down to Lake Como. I only had an issue once, and it can happen anywhere, but I give this as a warning to always be aware of your surroundings. The trains & stations in Switzerland are SAFE, SAFE, SAFE but sadly there are a few bad apples everywhere you go. Once in Solothurn while my husband and I were struggling to get our coins in a locker (many lockers now use a credit card system) a pickpocket tried to open my backpack while it was on my back. I whirled around and scared him off, we figured he’d jimmied the coin slot to create the diversion.

Enjoy your trip! You’ll love it!

    Laura E

PS–the luggage lockers at the Luzern station are credit card only, they are located at the far end of the station where the local trains run, on the other side of and down just a bit beside Gleis (platform) 15, I believe is the number.

    Hi David,

At the Lucerne station, you can find luggage lockers as well as staffed left luggage service. The lockers are available 24/7. The left luggage service is open during normal business hours.

You can find further details here: Lucerne train station

Regarding trip to Mt Rigi, you can find details on how to get there here: http://www.myswissalps.com/rigi/gettingthere

Wow you are so good, well done!!!

After I see the desire to help I will dare to ask…

I would like to know in advance how the process of depositing the luggage in the lockers works, it’s just the first time and I don’t want to get into trouble, is it with a key? Do you get keys? Automatic lock with a code?

I see that there are some here who have used it themselves, so if it is not difficult to describe to me how the process works, I would be happy.

And what is the difference between the human service and the blocker service? Is there any preference?

Many thanks to everyone who responds.

    Hi David,

The luggage lockers are accessible all hours (even outside of business hours) and comes in various sizes. Depending on the size, the prices range from CHF4 to CHF12 for the first 6 hours. It’s fairly easy to operate. There are 2 types – the blue lockers require locking/unlocking with a key (you take the key with you). The red ones require a QR code to open. The blue ones accept coins. The red ones accept cash and card payments.

If you have valuables with you, I recommend using the luggage deposit service usually offered by the SBB Travel Centre. This is only available during business hours. The price is usually CHF12 per luggage (also may depend on size of luggage).

    regards,

    Anna

You have just one more small question, is the cruise from Lucerne to vitznau accessible for strollers or wheelchairs?

The Luzern to Vitznau lake boat is not a ‘cruise’ in the normal sense of the word, because lake boats on the large Swiss lakes are regular timetabled boat services used by locals and tourists, even shoppers and commuters sometimes.

Like all medium sized boats, they have large gangplanks at each landing stage. There are always staff on hand when the gangway is deployed ( this is one thing that can not be automated!) who can help get children’s buggies and wheelchairs into the boat.

In the meantime, everything you need to know about SBB left luggage is here:
