Are public washrooms in Switzerland paid?
A traveler named orangej is preparing for a visit to several popular spots in Switzerland, including Mount Rigi and Grindelwald First. They want to know about the costs and availability of public washrooms, especially in hiking areas. The traveler is looking for practical advice on what to expect during their trip.
- Most train station washrooms charge between CHF0.50 to CHF2 and usually only accept coins.
- Tourist attractions like Grindelwald First and Mount Rigi have free toilet facilities available.
- It's best to use restrooms at the start of hiking trails since facilities along the trails are often limited.
- Water from fountains in Switzerland is generally safe to drink, but their availability can vary by location.

Hi everyone,
I heard that some public washrooms have fees – how much does it usually cost if you need to use a washroom? Do they only take cash and if so how much (just to know what kind of change to prepare)?
Are there washrooms available in most places including hiking spots? I’ll be going to places like Mount Rigi, Harder Kulm, Lauterbrunnen Valley, Grindelwald First – so wasn’t sure about the accessibility to washrooms.
Thank you!
