Bernina Express to Tirano, regional train to Milan – transfer time

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named anhdao is planning a train trip from Chur to Venice on June 4, asking about train delays and transfer times. They are particularly concerned about making connections in Tirano and Milano, given the tight schedules. They seek reassurance on their travel plan and alternatives if they miss a train.

Key takeaways:
  • 19 minutes is usually enough to switch trains in Tirano, as the stations are very close.
  • Be aware that trains in Switzerland can occasionally run late, so check weather and delays before your trip.
  • If you miss your connection in Milano, it's advisable to board the next train to Venice without delay.

    Hi,

I am planning to take trains from Chur to Venice on June 4 as follow:

    1) Bernina express: Chur (8:17am) –> Tirano (12:49pm)

    2) Tirano (1:08pm) –> Milano Centrale (3:40pm)

    3) Milano (4:45pm) –> Venezia S. Lucia (7:12pm)

    My question is:

    1) Has Bernina express ever been delayed?

    2) Do you think I have enough time to catch the second train from Tirano to Milano Centrale? Is 19 minutes window enough?

    3) Assuming I miss the 1:08pm train from Tirano to Milano, then I catch the next train from Tirano (2:08pm) to Milano (4:40pm).

Since I arrive Milano Centrale at 4:40pm, do I have time to catch the 4:45pm train from Milano to Venezia ? Is 5 minutes window enough?

    Appreciated your help!

    Hi anhdao,

Don’t worry, 19 minutes is enough to switch from the Bernina Express to the regional train in Tirano. The Trenord station is roughly only 5 mins walk from the SBB station in Tirano.

The timing to catch your connecting train from Milan to Venice however is very tight.

    Hello anhdao

    Welcome to MySwissAlps

Thanks for sharing with us your interesting journey, one I would like to make myself.  I would use the timings you are proposing.

Even in super efficient Switzerland trains occasionally run late.   On the Bernina line there is the possibility even in summer of extreme weather conditions causing a delay. (If on the morning of the fourth the weather forecast was very bad,  I would abandon the route via Tirano and go via Zurich.)

19 minutes at Tirano should be ample. The Swiss and Italian stations are alongside  each other.  There are usually no frontier checks.

In the unlikely event of missing the connection at Tirano, the 14 08 from there would probably miss the 16 45 connection at Milano Centrale.  Italian trains are not noted for their punctuality.  However on leaving Tirano I would sit AT THE  FRONT OF THE TRAIN.  Milano Centrale is a dead~end station.

If I missed the connection at Milano I woud book myself on to the next available train to Venezia.

    Best wishes

    Roger
