Arth Goldau: transfer to platform in 7 minutes?

Short summary – read this first

A tourist named Elfs9931 is traveling in Switzerland and needs to switch trains quickly at Arth-Goldau station. They have just 7 minutes to get from Platform 4 to Platform 6 and want to know if the underground stairs or the overhead bridge is better with luggage.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the underground stairs to reach Platform 6 as it is a more direct route.
  • Allow 7 minutes for the transit, which is generally sufficient for this distance.
  • Follow the clear signs at the station to guide your way to the next platform.
  • If you're concerned about time, consider taking an earlier train on your first leg to allow for a longer layover.

I’m a tourist travelling around Switzerland and I am boarding a train from Luzern to Arth-Goldau.

I will arrive on Platform 4 in Arth-Goldau and departing from Platform 6 towards Milan. May I check, how do I get from platform 4 to 6? Do I have to only take the overhead bridge or can I use the underground stairs as indicated in the map below? Because my group and I are carrying luggage’s and we only have 7 mins of transit time between both platforms.

    Hello Elfs9931,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The Swiss timetable is designed to ensure smooth transitions. Generally, 7 minutes is sufficient. At Arth-Goldau I would take the stairs going underground to reach platform 6. You will see clear signs guiding you accordingly.

In all but the five or six largest railway stations in Switzerland, the longest walking time between platforms is about 3 minutes based on the scientific average walking speed of an able bodied person. Remember that most people vastly underestimate how far they can walk in 1 minute. Scientifically, even a person over 70 can on average walk about 60 meters in 1 minute.

It should take you no more than about 2 minutes to get from platform 4 to 6 in Arth Goldau station

In addition, don’t forget that computer journey planners will by default always give you the fastest possible journey with the shortest possible connecting time. You can amend this by (a) just getting an earlier train on leg 1 of your journey or (b) doing an ‘advanced’ search on a journey planner which has the option of extending the lay over time at the station where you change trains.
