Bernina Express from Venice to Zurich

Short summary – read this first

Niketa, who is traveling from Australia, wants to know if she can take the Bernina Express on the same day she travels from Venice to Zurich, specifically from Lugano or Tirano. She has planned a full day for this trip but is looking to save time and explore more of Switzerland instead.

Key takeaways:
  • You can travel from Venice to Tirano via Milano Centrale, which takes about 6 hours.
  • The Bernina Express bus from Lugano leaves at 10:00 AM, so make sure your schedule allows for that.
  • Consider getting the Swiss Travel Pass for flexible travel options during your stay.

    Hello!

We are visiting Europe in April 2023 from Australia. we are flying to Rome first then going to Venice and from Venice to Zurich. i kept one day for Bernina Express trip from Zurich, but rather just wondering can we catch Bernina express the same day we travel from Venice to Zurich? if we go to Lugano from Venice and catch a Bernina Express from Lugano or Tirano?? or any other possible route??? I have planned one whole day for Bernina express from Zurich to Tirano but that will take lots of hours including going back to Zurich, so just thinking if we can make it while going from Venice to Zurich and save one day to explore something else in Switzerland. can I please have suggestions if this is possible or not?? And if yes then how should I plan it?? Also are there any border entry requirement to enter into Switzerland from Italy?? Would that affect my planning to catch Bernina express from Tirano??

    Thank you so much! 🙂

    Kind Regards, Niketa

There are several ways of getting from Venice to Tirano in order to ride the Bernina Railway

    1) Venezia – Milano – Chiasso (border into Switzerland) – LuganoBernina Express Bus – Tirano, but note that the Bernina Express bus departs Lugano at 10.00, probably too early for a connection from Venezia in the morning

    2) Venezia – Milano – Tirano

Option 2 would probably work better for you. It doesn’t really matter which train you take to ride the Bernina Railway since connections will be available to get you through to Chur and Zurich

Hi Niketa and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

You can check the route of the Bernina Express here: http://www.myswissalps.com/berninaexpress/gettingthere.

You can also travel from Venezia to Tirano via Milano Centrale. This route takes around 6 hrs. Then you take the Bernina Express from Tirano to Chur. In this case you skip the Bernina Express Bus. This is a long journey, I do not recommend doing it in 1 day.

Have you seen the route of the Gotthard Panorama Express? It travels from Lugano to Chur: http://www.myswissalps.com/gotthardpanoramaexpress/gettingthere.

Make sure to have a rail pass, like the Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass) if you travel more or the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass) if you travel only 1 day a lot.

Please check this one too: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy.

    I hope this helps,

    Ildiko
