We will be staying for a few days in Chur in May. We would like to take the Bernina Express toward Tirano. Since we are going back to Chur that evening, would like to ride the Bernina to a nice town, perhaps for lunch. Walk around. See pretty sights and/or shop. Then take regular train(s) back to Chur. Any suggestions for a nice stopover/turn around town between Chur and Tirano?

    Hi Eurogal,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

My recommendation would be Pontresina or St Moritz.

If you would like to try Swiss fondue and raclette, this restaurant may be of interest: http://www.engadin.ch/en/restaurants/restaurant-gondolezza/

It very much depends on how you want to compose your day. Chur – Tirano and back is quite a long way (9 hours travel time altogether ). Remember that the southern part only is the actual Bernina Railway).

You can break your journey at many places along the Albula Railway (Chur – Samedan – St Moritz) and places on the Bernina railway itself. You may want allocate a separate day to a trip just on the Albula route, for example.

If you want to break a journey on the Bernina itself, consider Miralago / Le Prese (you can walk between the two). They are at either end of a pretty lake. Le Prese is a fascinating place, where the Bernina railway runs right along the main street, fighting with heavy road traffic! Another great place to stop is Alp Grum

Thanks for the input! As to how I want to spend the day, the ride from Chur is the main attraction! Wanting a cute town, preferably quaint, 2-4 hrs from Chur that we could stop, walk around, eat. Then get back on a “regular” train back to Chur. I don’t really mind a long day because we’ll be sitting on train, taking in the awesome views! Thanks for all your help!

    Hi Eurogal,

I also recommend Alp Grüm. Poschiavo is a beautiful village too, so is also a nice stop during your trip.

Regarding the Bernina Express, make sure to book your seats in advance: http://www.myswissalps.com/berninaexpress/tickets.

    Take care,

    Ildiko
