Bernina Express seat reservation from St. Moritz

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is trying to book a seat reservation for June 3 from St. Moritz to Lugano. They are considering alternatives since direct options seem limited, and they're unsure if they should book from Chur or Davos. They need specific advice on how to navigate their journey and whether to prioritize simplicity or scenic routes.

Key takeaways:
  • Break the booking into two parts: St. Moritz to Tirano and then take a regional option or ferry to Lugano.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass offers flexibility; reserve your seat in advance if possible, especially during peak season.
  • You can take trains and ferries on the same day without prior booking, which provides more travel options.

I am trying to book by seat reservation for June 3 from St. Moritz to Lugano but I can’t seem to get that option. Do I just go ahead and book it from either Chur or Davos because those are the only 2 choices I seem to have. Will it make a difference?

If you are trying to book at shop.rhb.ch/en/catalog /product/view/id/18 then break the booking into two. Go St. Moritz to Tirano (limited seats left). There are regular train alternatives of course. Tirano to Lugano is sold out I’m afraid. You can continue from Tirano via Milan/Monza to Lugano on the Italian train network as far as Chiasso as an alternative.

Another option would be BEX St Moritz to Tirano. Regional train Tirano to Varenna. Ferry Varenna to Como and a train from Como to Lugano.

I went for the scenic option. Last minute travel requires compromise.

Indeed. The Palm Express is another scenic option. http://www.myswissalps.com/fo rum/topic/route-from-st-moritz-to-lugano. 😎

    Sounds good. 🙂

We are staying in Varenna then catching a train to Tirano and catching the BEX from there to St Moritz. So many places to go and lots of ways to get there.

Thank you for your tip, I reserved my seat on the BEX yesterday morning and there weren’t many left. Now I am just trying to decide which mode of transportation to take from Tirano to Lugano. Since we are lugging luggage around with us, do I take the simplest route or the most scenic. Artic Wolf’s comment about the bus makes me leery, so now I have to decide between a direct train ride or Paddington’s suggestion. I am guessing that I don’t have to book either of those ahead of time, correct?

    • No, seats on both trains and the ferry are available on the day and don’t require booking.

    Hi Walt,

The bus ride I was referring to was the Menaggio to Lugano leg. We will be taking the journey paddington suggested earlier on (8.24pm).
