Best car route from Zurich to Rhine Falls

Short summary – read this first

Steven is planning a family trip to Switzerland and is eager to find the most scenic driving route from Zurich airport to the Rhine Falls. He has noticed three similar routes on Google Maps and wants advice on which one is the prettiest, especially since one goes through Germany.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose the route through typical Swiss farmland for a pleasant drive and nice views.
  • Consider making a round trip by selecting one route to the falls and another on the way back for variety.
  • If time allows, visit Stein am Rhein, a charming town about 30 minutes from the Rhine Falls.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass is a great option for flexible travel if you decide to use public transportation for part of your trip.

Hello everyone, May 20th is getting closer and closer and my family is very excited about our trip to Switzerland. I have been scouring the internet for information on which drive would be the most scenic from Zurich airport to the Rhine Falls. I will be renting a car and saw on Google maps that there were three routes all about the same length of time and that one goes through Germany.

I read on the German governent site for entry requirements that all we would need to have are our COVID vaccination card with us which we will always have with us so that would not be a problem. I used the Google street view to see what was around the highways on all three routes and some were through towns and others were in farm lands. Would anyone know which would be the most scenic since they all are around the same time frame.

Thank you everyone for all the fantastic information!!!

    Steven

Rhine falls is essentially a very low level falls, as it is not in a high alpine/mountain area. As such driving from Zurich by any route would be ‘pleasant’ rather than spectacular. If you drive the country route you will be default be driving through typical Swiss agricultural farmland which is always nice.

I input ‘Zurich Flughafen’ to ‘Rheinfall Parkplatz’ in google maps directions and suggest you follow the cycle route itinerary (but of course in a car and ignoring the cycling time Google shows!)

    Hi Steven!

Will you be making a round trip from/to Zurich? In that case you could pick one route on your way to the falls and another one on your way back. The segment through Germany includes a more forested area, which could be nice. The cycling route as suggested by 1960 would definitely be a good option too.

If you have time, consider including a visit to Stein am Rhein on the same day. It’s a lovely little town along the river Rhine (as its name suggests :-)) at a 30-minute drive from the Rhine Falls. You could then return to Zurich following the most direct route, or take a slower and slightly more ‘rural’ route along the Hüttwilersee and Greifensee.
