Best trekking apps for hiking in the Swiss Alps

Short summary – read this first

Sam is looking for recommendations for a trekking app to use in the mountains of Switzerland, expressing concern about getting lost. Fellow hikers suggest using 'Bergfex Touren' for its accuracy and features, including tracking movements and offering data on hiking difficulty and duration. They also recommend checking out the Rega app for added safety.

Key takeaways:
  • Try the 'Bergfex Touren' app for accurate hiking suggestions and tracking features.
  • Consider subscribing to Rega for emergency support; it has an app to help with your GPS location if needed.
  • Both 'Bergfex Touren' and the Rega services are available in English.

    Hi Sam,

Nice to meet a fellow hiker. I live in the eastern part of Switzerland, in Graubünden. I use “Bergfex Touren.” I’ve never checked if it works for the rest of Switzerland, and you may have to change App Stores (to the Swiss App Store) to get it, if you have an iPhone. That said, it’s really accurate. It will give you suggestions based on difficulty, duration, type (hike, trek, mountain bike, ski…..). You can also use it to track your movements. I use it a lot for skiing. It gives good data – distance, vertical ascents/descents, speed (max, min, avg), calories burned, time doing the activity, time resting and so forth. If you get the ad-free version it costs about $8 or so, billed via Apple yearly, but you can cancel before it renews. It might also be worthwhile to check into becoming a patron of Rega, the Swiss Air Rescue. https://www.rega.ch/en/ Though we’ve never used its services, it’s good to have; we’ve had it for over 20 years. The cost is CHF40 for a year (and if you don’t want it anymore, you just don’t have to pay again). It comes with an App for your phone that keeps track of where you are. If you get into trouble, you can just push a button on the App and they have your GPS location and you can talk to them to tell them the problem. You can check out their website.

    Happy hiking,

    Don

I neglected to mention that both Bergfex Touren and Rega are available in English.
