Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning a two-week trip to Switzerland from August 24th to September 6th, focusing on hiking and exploring popular mountains like Pilatus and Jungfrau. They are seeking advice on which lake trip is better—Lake Brienz or Lake Thun—for their itinerary.

Key takeaways:
  • Lake Thun offers wider surroundings and beautiful sights, including castles and views of the Bernese Alps.
  • Lake Brienz is smaller with impressive steep mountains and the stunning Giessbach Falls, making for an exciting boat trip.

First of all love this site! So helpful and informative. My husband and I (late 40’s early 50’s) will be traveling for 2 weeks from August 24th-Sept 6th. I would like to just get everyone’s opinion on which lake trip they liked best and why? (Brienz versus Thun) We will be doing lots of hiking and exploring all the big mountains (Pilatus, Titlus, Rigi, Materhorn, Jungfrau, etc) We also hope to explore lots of small villages. I’m not interested in the time tables for these trips and I know everyone has different likes, etc. I just asking for you own experience. So excited to get there. thanks

Hi TitafromTx! Thank you for your kind words. I’m happy to hear you’re so excited! I hope you’ll enjoy every bit of your stay. You can compare both boat trips here:

As for your question: that’s a tough one. I wouldn’t be able to choose to be honest, as both lakes offer different experiences. Lake Thun is larger and its surroundings are wider and more gentle. You’ll see some castles along the shores, and if you’re lucky enough and weather is clear you’ll get to see the famous Bernese trio of Eiger, Mönch and (part of the) Jungfrau. Lake Brienz is smaller, so a full boat trip takes less time. It’s surrounded by steeper mountains and rock walls than Lake Thun, which makes the whole experience pretty impressive, and the Giessbach falls are beautiful too. So there you go… I know it’s not the definitive answer you were looking for, but I hope it helps you to decide for yourself.
