Should I stay in a chalet when we visit Switzerland and where?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named ChemistZ is curious about staying in a chalet while visiting Switzerland and wants to know if it's really a must-do experience. They are looking for recommendations on specific chalets, as their initial research didn't yield helpful results. They are especially interested in finding locations that align with their travel plans.

Key takeaways:
  • Chalets often offer stunning views and access to nature, making them a desirable stay during your visit to Switzerland.
  • Consider renting a chalet with a group to share costs, as they can be pricey for individuals.
  • Look into holiday apartments (or Ferien Wohnung) as a budget-friendly alternative to chalets; they can provide a similar experience without the high price tag.
  • You can find many more holiday apartments than chalets, offering a greater variety of options.

I hear that one must stay in a chalet at least once while in Switzerland. Is that really true? If so, where and which one? Being American, I envision chalets as big ski lodges like a hotel of sorts but in looking briefly in Switzerland it seems that is different here?

    Hi ChemistZ,

Chalets in Switzerland have certainly become quite popular over the years.  Often renowned for their views they offer and access to nature, as well as the traditional Swiss architecture – decorated wooden balconies, wide rooftops.

If it fits in with your plans, “go for it”.  More information regarding chalet stays, can be researched in the link below:

    Kind regards,

I did of course look at the link you sent. It does not have a way of filtering specifically by chalet. Plus, I was hoping members who have actually stayed in a chalet might post which ones and where if they liked them.

    Hi ChemistZ,

What I consider the ultimate Swiss chalet is a chalet-style detached house like Yolanda described it. One that you don’t share with others. More common is the chalet-style small apartment building like this one in Wengen. The ultimate chalet is pricey and typically but not always a bit remote. If not remote, it’s in a small village. I always ended up in “normal” houses or apartments, because of price and convenient location. I rented an old farmhouse once, that was quite an experience.

Perhaps there are members who can share their favorites, but if you have a timeframe and an area you’re considering, feel free to share for suggestions.

    Hi ChemitzZ.

Chalets start to make sense if you are traveling as a group so you can defray the cost. If you consider you can spend $300 a night at a hotel for a couple ($2100 for 7 nights),  a chalet for 6 people might work out well. Have a look at Booking.com to get an idea of value.

The next best thing would be to look at holiday apartments (Ferien Wohnung or FeWo for short). This has sort of been taken over by AirBNB, but they can give you the chalet vibe and not cost as much. For example, we are staying in Grindelwald in September in a 3 bedroom apartment for $275 a night.

There are also a lot more FeWos than chalets. In Grindelwald there are about 130 apartments, but only 6 chalets.

I hope this gives you a few ideas.

    Have fun,
    Alan
