Dinner cruise Lake Geneva with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler and their family are planning a dinner cruise on the Savoie on Lake Geneva in August but are confused about ticket options. They're considering the 'adult' ticket for CHF 123 and the 'General Abo 1st Class' for CHF 88, unsure of which to buy since they will have the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, you only need to pay for the three-course dinner, making the cruise total CHF 88 per person.
  • The 'General Abo 1st Class' ticket is for holders of the annual 'GA' season ticket; it's cheaper because the travel cost is waived with that ticket.
  • If you have a 2nd class Swiss Travel Pass, check if you need to pay extra to upgrade to 1st class for the cruise.

My family and I are interested in taking the dinner cruise on the Savoie on Lake Geneva when we are there in August. I was going to purchase tickets online, but am confused about which tickets to buy. For the 1st class, 3 course menu there seem to be two options – “adult” for CHF 123 and “General Abo 1 st Class” for CHF 88. I do not know what the latter ticket means. We will have the Swiss Travel Pass. Which ticket should we purchase?

The Swiss ‘Generalabonnement’ or General Abo is the national ‘all-lines’ season ticket which anyone can buy if they live in Switzerland for long parts of the year. Once you have a GA you can travel anywhere free for a year.

So the 88 CHF fare is the dinner cruise fee for anyone who has an annual ‘GA’ season ticket

I’ve just had a look at the CGN web site and the STP is valid. However the web site (very poor if it is…) does not make it clear. I think that the CHF88 is the meal price and if you have STP the travel fare is zero (as it would be with the GA), thus your total cost would be CHF88 per person

This is based on what I have read on this page:

    http://www.cgn.ch/en/evening-off-the-coast-savoie-cruise.html

and also the FAQ which reads:

Is the Swiss Travel Pass valid?

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is valid on all our cruises (except for events and “Fondue Festival” cruises). It is designed for foreign visitors to Switzerland.

Trivia: my first recollection of riding on one of the Lake Geneva steamers was at about 7 years old (therefore 1967…) when we went with a UN party on the lake to watch the ‘Fete de Geneve’ fireworks display

    Hi WTandBeyond,

That’s correct what 1960man has highlighted. If you have the Swiss Travel Pass, the cost of the boat trip is waived: see https://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity and https://www.myswissalps.com/boatlakegeneva/tickets. You just need to pay for the 3-course dinner on board. However if you have a 2nd class STP, you might need to pay for an upgrade to 1st class. More information about upgrading from 2nd to 1st class here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/2nd1stclass

    Regards,

    Anna
