GoldenPass Express: Upgrade costs and buying a Saver Day Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Elle777 is planning a trip on the Golden Express from Interlaken Ost to Montreux. They're seeking clarification on how to upgrade from a second class ticket to first class or Prestige, and whether a Swiss Travel Pass is required for a Saver Day Pass. Elle777 has already gathered some pricing and details but needs specific examples for their routes.

Key takeaways:
  • You can upgrade from a 2nd class ticket to 1st or Prestige class on the GoldenPass by paying the difference in fare.
  • A Berner Oberland Pass allows you to get a 50% discount on certain legs, but you’ll still need to pay for upgrades accordingly.
  • The Saver Day Pass is available to everyone and does not require a Swiss Travel Pass to purchase.

    Hello Swiss travelers!

So…. I believe  was able to find the cost of reserving a seat in the different classes ( 20CH for a seat reservation in 2nd class and 96CH for Prestige ) in addition to the RESERVATION FEE of 20CH and 35 CH respectively).

I could not however find the cost of upgrading from second class fare to either first class or to prestige. I am searching for the fare from Interlaken Ost to Montreux on the Golden Express.  Since I plan to have a Berner Oberland Pass, one leg is free and one leg is 1/2 price. Do I just add the difference between second class and the other class fares to figure the upgrade cost per leg? Also, just wondering, to use the Saver Day Pass, must you have a SWiss Travel Pass? If you know the answers, could you give examples? I have spent a LOT of time at the gpx.swiss website and found the trains I wanted and the seats, but only pricing for the latter. Thank you for any assistance you can offer:)

    Hi Elle777,

Yes, that’s right.  With a 2nd class pass or ticket, you can upgrade to 1st or Prestige class on the GoldenPass. Scroll to  “Traveling in 1st class or Prestige class with a 2nd class pass or ticket” below:

(You can also read about all the pricing for a ride on the GoldenPass in this link, within the different sections).

Additional information in regard to upgrading from 2nd to 1st here:

If you have a 2nd class Berner Oberland Pass.  All information regarding this pass can be read here – lots of useful details, including coverage map and purchase options:

Correct, the leg Lucerne to Saanen is covered.  However Montreux to Saanen is not but you’ll receive a 50% discount on this section with this pass. In your example you’d need to pay for the upgrade from Interlaken Ost to Saanen, plus you’ll need to purchase a 50% discounted ticket for Saanen to Montreux – probably easier to just purchase a 1st class ticket for this section but it will be discounted.

You can buy the class upgrade online, at a ticket machine or at the ticket counter. If you navigate to “Other websites of interest” in the link I provided in regard to upgrading from 2nd to 1st, there are some additional links here, where you can calculate upgrade costs.

Note, the seat reservations and surcharge for Prestige class in GoldenPass Express: no discount.

The Saver Day Pass is open to anyone.  Our Saver Day Pass guide can be found below – all the necessary details together with purchase options too:

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
