There seem to be several classic hotels in St. Mortiz from the so-called Golden Age of Travel: The Kulm Hotel (1856), Badrutt’s Palace Hotel (1896), Suvretta House (1912), and the Carlton Hotel St. Moritz (1913). For daytrip visiting AND NOT staying overnight (can’t afford that!!), any thoughts on which ones have the best public spaces and historic preservation/atmosphere? Even a cursory glance at the prices in the bars and restaurants leaves my head spinning, so I want to make sure that IF we splurge, we’ve picked someplace that is worthy and not just another high-end tourist gouge. And while I doubt it, any insider tips for one of the hotels’ spaces that aren’t astronomical? A lesser-known cafe, bar, or space tucked away perhaps?

    Hi Dan!

I think Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, Kulm Hotel and Suvretta House all fit your criteria for a romantic and historical atmosphere.

Hotel Waldhaus am See would be a more affordable alternative. It’s not as luxurious as the other ones, but it exists since 1885. The dining room has a great view over the lake.

A little late in my reply but THANK YOU Annika for the Waldhuas am See suggestion. Exactly what I was looking for and had overlooked. Thanks again!
