Hi

Do the Treno Gottardo trains do the exact same route from Lugano to Fluelen as the Gotthard Panorama Express (not a shorter less scenic route) and is theTreno Gottardo tickets covered fully on a STP , is it a direct route without changing of trains with the Treno Gottardo?

Lastly how much will the upgrade from second to first class + the seat reservation on the Gotthard Panorama Express be during September and is the seat reservation needed for 17 September, out of season?

Hi Hestie,

Treno Gottardo is a regular train and you can it ride for free with the Swiss Travel Pass. It follows the same route as the Gotthard Panorama Express between Bellinzona and Flüelen. At Bellinzona, you will need to switch to another train to travel to Lugano (or vice versa), also free with the Swiss Travel Pass. You can check the train schedul es on the SBB timetable.

If you choose to travel on the Gotthard Panorama Express with a 2nd Class Swiss Travel Pass, you need an upgrade ticket. The upgrade cost is route-specific. You can find more information about this here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/2nd1stclass

You also need to make a seat reservation (about CHF16 per person). This is obligatory and advisable to do as soon as possible as seats do run out. You can make online seat reservation here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gotthardpanoramaexpress/tickets

Both trains traverse the historic Gotthard mountain route – a legendary railway completed in 1882 which transformed travel between northern and southern Europe.

Both trains indeed follow the same route. You can read about the differences under “Regular trains and boats versus the official Gotthard Panorama Express” at https://www.myswissalps.com/gotthardpanoramaexpress.

I’ve done Gotthard Panorama Express train ride myself and absolutely enjoyed it. But you can pick whatever suits your schedule, budget and travel preferences best: the route is exactly the same.

The Swiss Travel Pass fully covers the Treno Gottardo. It also fully covers the boat part between Lucerne and Flüelen. For the Gotthard Panorama Express train you’d have to pay an additional supplement. You can use the link provided by Anna and the Swiss Travel Pass validity information (see the section “Top attractions covered by the Swiss Travel Pass” at http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass/validity.

Thank you for the information, I think we will take the Treno Gottardo. I have been looking on the SBB timetable but I do not see a IR code for any of the trains leaving Lugano. If you can point out which of the trains (around 9 in the morning) is the Treno Gottardo it would prevend us getting on a train that doesn’t follow the Gotthard’s route.

Hi again!

You can fill out a “via” station in the timetable to force it to show a particular route. In this case you could pick Göschenen for example (http://www.myswissalps.com/gotthardpanoramaexpress/gettingthere). This page explains how to add a via station: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

If you click on any of the connections presented by the timetable, you should see “Treno Gottardo”. And if you click once more to see all stations in between, you should see “Gotthard Panoramastrecke” between Göschenen and Airolo.

I too just went through scheduling the trip from Lugano to Fluelen on the Treno Gottardo. I found a 9:25 from Lugano to Bellinzona. The Treno Gottardo can be boarded in Bellinzona and the train is an InterRegio train.

What time was the Treno Gottardo train that you took from Bellinzona to Fluelen? Did you also take the boot from Fluelen to Lucerne?

We have not traveled yet. It will be on Oct. 3rd. The 9:25 from Lugano gets into Bellinzona at 9:50 and there is a 9:59 leaving on the Treno Gottardo at 9:59 and arriving into Fluelen at 11:43. The 9:59 is a IR26 Direction Basel. From Fluellen, we plan to take the boat to Lucerne. We are on a slightly different schedule because we are going to stay in Bellinzono for about an hour, arrive in Fluelen at 12:43 and take a 14:00 Steam Paddle Boat to Lucerne.

The Treno Gottardo trains depart Bellinzona every hour at xx.59, so there is a 08.59 from Bellinzona
