Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Rmunson1 is planning a trip across the Gotthard Pass and is seeking advice on the three main routes: the tunnel road, a scenic alpine road, and the Tremola Pass known for its many turns. They want to understand the pros and cons of each route to make an informed choice.

Key takeaways:
  • Choose the road tunnel for the quickest and safest trip across the Gotthard Pass, taking just 20 minutes.
  • Opt for the alpine Gotthard Pass for stunning mountain views, which takes about an hour.
  • The Tremola Pass offers a challenging drive with numerous hairpin turns, and it's typically only accessible from the south.

    Hi Rmunson1,

There are 2 ways to travel across the Gotthard Pass.

No. 1 is via the road tunnel – the lazy option some would call it but obviously the safest and quickest way to get to the other side, in just 20 minutes. The other option (No.2), more scenic with stunning views of the mountains and the valley, is via the alpine Gotthard Pass, which will take you 1 hour to get from one side to other side of the mountain.

And if you feel up for more adventure, you could try No.3 that includes travelling on the Tremola Pass. This is a 7m wide cobbled road that has 37 bends, and is considered as Switzerland’s longests street monument. As far as I know you can only access it when you are travelling from the south. To be honest I’m not even sure if it’s still open to normal traffic.

Perhaps someone on the forum could shed some light on this.

    I’m a safe driver, I would always pick No. 1 🙂

    Anna, thanks for your info.

I remain interested in the Tremola pass road if anyone can report how sane/crazy it is to attempt that.

I see this is a continuation of the previous post about roads on Google Maps

‘Red’ 2 is National Motorway 2, the Gotthard motorway that goes under the Gotthard pass in a tunnel

‘Blue’ 2 is National Road 2, which is the old main road over the Gotthard Pass, on the south side an improved modern road replaced the Tremola in the late 1960s

Tremola is the original south ramp Gotthard pass road from the 19th century.

It is not a bad road for driving – but it famously has many sharp hairpins
