How to add Swiss Family Card to SBB app

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is heading to Switzerland soon and has bought a Swiss Half-Fare card for themselves and added a Swiss Family Card for their child. They want to know how to use the Family Card when purchasing train tickets via the SBB app, and if tickets bought online will appear in the app since they won't have a printer.

Key takeaways:
  • You do not need to link the Swiss Family Card to the SBB app; just present it to the ticket inspector if asked.
  • Purchased tickets on the SBB app can be accessed digitally without printing.
  • The Swiss Family Card is valid on all mountain routes, including Gornergrat, Grindewald First, and Schilthorn.

I’m a tourist travelling to Switzerland in in a few days. After creating a SBB account, I purchased a Swiss Half-Fare card for myself (adult) and a was able to add the free Swiss Family Card for my child (under 15). I understand the Family Card allows my child to travel for free with me.

When buying a train ticket through the SBB mobile app, I can am able to add the Half Fare Travelcard to my profile prior to purchasing tickets, but do not see the option to add a Swiss Family Card for my child. The app defaults to a Children’s Day Pass. Is there a way to use the Swiss Family Card on the mobile app?

On the sbb.ch website, I’m able to purchase the tickets and select a children’s co-travelcard. Is that the same as the Swiss Family Card?

If I purchase the tickets on the sbb website instead of the app while logged into my sbb account, will the tickets show up digitally on my app? I won’t have access to a printer to print out paper tickets.

Apologies if this has been answered already. I did a quick search, but didn’t find an answer.

Thank you in advance, this website is great!

    Hi Bcdfds,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

There is no need to link the Swiss Family Card to the SBB app. With the Swiss Family Card, your child can travel along for free as long as you have a valid ticket. He/She doesn’t need a ticket at all. Just present the Swiss Family Card to the ticket inspector upon request. You can find more details on how to use the Swiss Family Car here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard/howtouse

Tickets purchased on the SBB app are stored under Tickets. You don’t have to print them out.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Anna

Does the Swiss Family Card also apply to these trains/gondolas? I’m confused because I understand they may be privately operated and not part of SBB?

    – Gornergrat

    – Train to Grindewald First

    – Schilthorn

    Thanks in advance, Anna!

    Hi Bcdfds!

Yes, the Swiss Family Card is valid on all of these mountain routes too. The operator doesn’t matter. Children travel along for free on all routes as indicated on the validity map (https://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard/validity).

    Does that answer your question?
