How to get to Milan from Tirano other than bus?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a four-day trip to Switzerland at the end of October, starting from Bern and focusing on a ride on the Bernina Express. They are concerned about getting to Milan from Tirano since the bus service is not available on their travel date and need advice on alternative options and whether those journeys are covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.

Key takeaways:
  • You can take a direct train from Tirano to Milano Centrale, which takes about two and a half hours, but this train is not covered by the Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Alternatively, consider the Palm Express Bus 631 from St. Moritz to Lugano, but it runs only once a day.
  • Check the Swiss Travel Pass validity map for coverage details through online resources.
  • Plan to catch an afternoon train from Tirano to Milan if you want a direct option.

Hi! I need some advice on my upcoming trip to Swiss by end of October this year. My friends and i will be there for 4 days and we will be coming into Swiss from Paris and start our journey from Berne on 27/10/19 with STP. My concern is on the last day of our trip, which is on 30/10/19. We have planned to ride on Bernina Express at 10am above from St moritz to Tirano on that day. However, as per current schedule that we’ve checked recently, there will be no bus available from Tirano to Lugano, which will allow us to continue our journey to Milan.

    1. Is there any other way that I can reach Milan other than the Bernina bus? According to the maps provided in this website, there’s only bus available for that journey (or i might have misunderstood the remarks on the maps).

    2. If there is other way ie normal train from Tirano to Lugano up until Milan, does that journey covered under STP?

    3. I’ve checked via Rome2Rio app that there is train from Tirano – Lugano and Lugano – Milan on 30/10/19, but how do I know if the journey was covered up with STP until Milan or not?

Appreciate if someone can help clarifies these queries for me. TQ 🙂

    Hi Hana Latiff

There’s a mostly hourly regional train operated by Italian Railways direct from Tirano to Milano Centrale. Going between those two points via Lugano would be a long way round by public transport, and if by train you’d have to veer away from Milano anyway. The direct train takes two and a half hours, and on 30th October, later afternoon and evening trains leave Tirano station (adjacent to the Bernina Line station) at .08 past the hour. The 16.08, for instance, is due to arrive at Milano Centrale at 18.40. There’s no 14.08 train.

The train will not be covered by the Swiss Travel Pass: https://www.myswissalp s.com/swisstravelpass/ validity.

The attached picture is of the Milano train waiting at the Italian railway terminus in Tirano, photographed from the narrow gauge tracks of the adjacent Rhaetianbahn station (the Bernina line).

    Hope that helps

    John

You just miss out on the BEX Bus, which only runs Thursday through Sunday at that time of year, by one day.

Another alternative is to take the Palm Express Bus 631 from St Moritz to Lugano. It’s scenic but you miss out on the Bernina Express route: http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress.

    Thank Ildiko! 🙂

Rockoyster, may i know how frequent does the Palm Express Bus 631 operates in a day? Is there any website that I can check out for more details on this route? Appreciate if you can share it here.

    Hello Hana Latiff,

If you enter St. Moritz to Lugano in the timetable, you will get all transportation options including one direct bus per day. That’s the Palm Express.

Another website to consult is the Swiss post car website: http://www.postauto.ch/en/exc ursion-tips/palm-express

The train is easy and comfy to Milan central station and pretty cheap! We just did it a few days ago the other way.
