Hello,
Our family’s first trip to Switzerland that included Lucerne, Vevey and Wengen was absolutely amazing.  I am now planning a trip for a friend and myself.  We are 63 and 70, and we take a few hiking trips together each year – usually hiking 8-12 miles a day.

Potential itinerary that I am considering:
8-30 -9-1  Lucerne
9-1 – 9-6 Murren
9-6 – 9-10 Kandersteg
9-10 – 9-15  Grimentz
9-15 – 9-18  Lake Thun
9-18 – 9-21  Appenzell
9-21 – 9-22  Zurich

Do you see any major mistakes I’ve made in the above?

I am questioning whether I have planned too many days in Kandersteg…  We did a day trip from Wengen last time to hike some of Lake Oeschinensee our last trip, and I wanted to spend more time there this time.

I am also wondering if you have specific recommendations for other mountain villages that you think I should consider replacing over any of the areas I have listed above.

Should I change the order of any of the above itinerary for travel ease?  I was hoping to make it to The Gstaad Züglete & Cow Parade on 9-4-27,  The Val d’Anniviers Désalpe in St-Luc on 9-11-27, The Justistal Chästeilet on 9-17-27.   I realize these dates aren’t set in stone, but I think I have the right locations in my itinerary to be able to see these events.

I sincerely appreciate any and all advice and suggestions.

Your itinerary is very interesting!  But please can you confirm one matter.  You are talking about 2027-fourteen months time.

You are proposing a lot of moving form resort to resort.  I do not think that is a good idea. There is also a problem with Murren.

On the 4th September it appears that you are planning a day excursion from Murren to Gstaad.  The journey will take just over three hours going, and just over three hours coming back….

I would suggest that for your stays in the Berner Oberland you stay in either Thun or Spiez.  Both of these towns are very good transport nodes.  (In marked contrast to Murren and Kandersteg.)

Another point you need to consider is what Public Transport Passes you should invest in.  I would suggest a 15-day Swiss Travel Pass followed by an 8-day Swiss Travel Pass.  (On 22nd September just buy local Zurich  tickets.)

Hi Kristy—

I would definitely add Zermatt (and if you want to limit the number of stops, drop Lake Thun). Zermatt has unlimited, spectacular hiking opportunities. Here are just a few:

1) from Gornergrat (the glaciers are a must-see and numerous hikes from there)
2) from Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
(Matterhorn Glacier Trail, Hörnlihütte)
3) from Sunnega/Rothorn (5-Seenweg)
