Jungfraujoch, getting off the train at Eismeer

Short summary – read this first

A traveler, Marion, is planning to visit Jungfraujoch and wants to know if they can get off the train at Eigerwand or Eismeer and then reboard later. They need clarification on train stops and what to expect during their trip to the mountain peak.

Key takeaways:
  • You can briefly stop at Eismeer station for about 5 minutes, but you must reboard the same train to continue to Jungfraujoch.
  • The train no longer stops at Eigerwand station, so you can only get off at Eismeer for the short break.
  • There's nothing to do at Eismeer except use the restroom and enjoy viewing windows, so don’t expect outdoor access.

    Hi Marion,

Everyone is allowed to get off the train at the Eismeer station for about 5 minutes on the way up to the Jungfraujoch. The train doesn’t stop there on the way down.

However, you are not allowed to stay there, but have to reboard the same train and continue to the Jungfraujoch. There is nothing there except the platform, viewing windows and toilets. There is no access to the outside.

If you had a window seat, you will probably find that someone else has taken your seat when you reboard, probably because they can’t remember where they were sitting, or perhaps because they think your seat is better than theirs 😉

However, this does not matter, as the rest of the journey is inside a tunnel, and there is no advantage to having a window seat.

When I last made that trip in late December 2016, the train no longer stopped at the Eigerwand station. According to an online Swiss newspaper, bypassing the Eigerwand station came into effect from 11 December 2016.
