Jungfraujoch and Bachalpsee hike in one day

Short summary – read this first

AllieB is planning a trip to Wengen and is interested in visiting Jungfraujoch and hiking to Bachalpsee. They want to know if it’s feasible to do both in one day. Early starts and careful planning can help fit both activities in, but it might be better to spread them out over two days for a more enjoyable experience.

Key takeaways:
  • Start your day early to have enough time for both the Jungfraujoch trip and the Bachalpsee hike.
  • The trip from Wengen to Jungfraujoch takes about 1.5 hours, but consider the elevation and how long you might want to stay there.
  • It’s advisable to use the SBB timetable for planning your journey effectively.
  • If you're not in a hurry, consider spreading the activities over two days for a more relaxed experience.

We’re planning to stay in Wengen and are interested in doing the junfrau trip. The Bachalpsee lake hike is also on our list and I’m wondering if it makes sense to (and would be possible) to do both in the same day? Thanks in advance for any pointers!

    Hi AllieB,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

If you start out really early, it is certainly possible to combine the trip to the Jungfraujoch with the hike to Bachalpsee in one day.

The trip from Wengen to Jungfraujoch takes about 1.5 hours with the mountain railway. From Jungfraujoch to Grindelwald, it takes about 50 minutes with the train and cable car. Then it’s just a short shuttle ride or walk to the Firstbahn terminal for the cable car ride up to Grindelwald First. The hike to the lake took me about 2 hours (but I was with my kids). We spent nearly the whole day there because we just loved the view and would’ve stayed longer if we were allowed to camp 🙂

It’s fairly easy to plan your journey with the SBB timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    Hello AllieB

Since you ask: Yes, it would be possible, if you follow Anna’s hints in the precious post, but ( in my opinion) it would not make much sense. Going to the Jungfraujoch will be surprizingly strenuous, even if you sit in the train the whole time, because of the elevation difference. And you may want to stay on the Jungfraujoch for an hour or two, to enjoy the experience. When you do that, you might not feel attracted by the two-hour hike to Bachalpsee. My advice is you devote two days for your project.

Now, if you are young and strong, and in a hurry…

No matter how, I wish you a pleasant alpine experience!
