Jungfraujoch via different routes with a Swiss Half Fare Card

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Jungfraujoch using the Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal and is unsure about the ticket costs and flexibility. They want to know if a half fare card covers the entire round trip and if they can change their return route without booking separate tickets in advance. Helpful advice on ticket options and the importance of checking conditions is provided.

Key takeaways:
  • The half fare card offers a discount on the ticket price, but you should confirm the details for round trips.
  • Most round-trip tickets allow you to choose your return route on the spot, but make sure to check if any seat reservations are needed for your travel dates.
  • Always verify ticket conditions and available routes with different vendors to find the best option.

Just checking my understanding.  Looking to take the Eiger Express from Grindelwald Terminal and then Jungfrau railway to Jungfraujoch.  Using the half fare card the cost shows as about 110.  Does that cover the entire round trip?   If I book the round trip from Terminal using Eiger Express and change my mind on way back down, could I instead take the railway to Kleine Scheidegg and then take the cogwheel railway back down to Grindelwald?  Or do I have to decide in advance and book 2 one-way trips?  Thank you in advance for any help.

    Hi RayBat,

When you have a moment, take  a read of our Jungfraujoch travel guide. I think it will help you out on your questions.

    Here’s the link.

Furthermore, if you scroll to “Where to buy Jungfraujoch tickets and tours: recommended webshops”, the first option will allow you to travel to/from Jungfraujoch via different routes.

    Kind regards,

    Hi Raybat!

Most round-trip tickets (such as the one offered by the official SBB tourist webshop http://www.swissrailways.com) are valid on all routes, and you can decide which you want to use on the spot. However:

    1. If you’re traveling between May and August 2025, seat reservations for some segments are obligatory. That means you’ll have to decide which routes to use in advance. Details are in the Jungfraujoch guide Yolanda provided.
    2. Different vendors can offer different tickets: some with flexible routes such as the example I provided above, some with fixed routes. So it’s best to check the options at https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/jungfraujoch/#tickets and carefully read each ticket’s conditions before buying.

    Does that answer your question?
