Kleine Scheidegg – Grindelwald gondola, train

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning to hike the panorama trail from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg and wants to know if they can take the train to Eigergletscher and then the gondola to Grindelwald. They also ask about the scenic value of the train from Kleine Scheidegg compared to the Eiger Express.

Key takeaways:
  • You can take the cogwheel train from Kleine Scheidegg to Eigergletscher and then the Eiger Express gondola down to Grindelwald.
  • The train ride options are both scenic, so you can choose either route based on convenience.
  • If you have time for only one mountain, Grindelwald First is quicker to reach and offers stunning views.

Hello, we are planning to do the panorama trail from Mannlichen to Kleine Scheidegg. We were wondering if we can take the train up to Eigergletscher from there and then hop on the gondola down to Grindelwald? Also, if the train ride from Kl. Scheidegg to Grindelwald might be more scenic than the Eiger Express?

    Hi endelion,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes, this plan is doable. From Kleine Scheidegg you can take the cogwheel train to Eigergletscher then continue down to Grindelwald Terminal with the Eiger Express gondola. This journey takes 20 mins. If you take the cogwheel train from Eigergletscher to Grindelwald, you will need to change train in Kleine Scheidegg first. This journey will take about 1 hour. Both routes are scenic in my opinion.

You can find information about the panorama trail from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg here: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking/maennlichen-kleinescheidegg

One more thing I would like to ask… We will have time for only one of the following: Grindelwald First or Stockhorn and we’ll get there solely for the views and the ride, no hikes, no other activities. So… Which one is more impressive and memorable? 🙂

    Hi endelion,

Both mountains are unique and offer magnificent views of the surrounding nature. If you are based in the Jungfrau region though, travelling to Grindelwald First (http://www.myswissalps.com/grindelwaldfirst/gettingthere) would be quicker and easier than to Stockhorn. You can use the SBB timetable to plan ahead and check suitable connections: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    regards,

    Anna
