Hello, I am hoping these are questions with an easy answer. We are in Lake Constance today, Friday, and in Garmisch tomorrow. Due to the low hanging clouds, we have yet to see a mountain but there may be some clearing tomorrow so we may get lucky. We have changed our plans to go to Jungfrau due to the weather and were hoping someone could send us to a pretty mountain overlook or simple hiking trail near within driving distance of Lake Constance, a country cheese dairy open for visitors, a Swiss chocolate producer, and the last question, tomorrow when we drive to Garmisch, is there a more scenic route than the highway? Thank you for any help!

Lake Constance is a fairly vast area. Where exactly.

I would suggest Berggasthaus Aesche aescher.ch/en/" but it closed for the season. Second Slowpoke’s suggestions and the whole Appenzeller is lovely country.

If you are going to Garmisch in Germany then you could stop off at Bregenz and take the Pfänderbahn up the hill. Nice views up there and there is a great alpine inn to eat just over the other side from the cable car top station.

As you are in the Lake Constance area, there are numerous hikes along the lake which you can take advantage of. It is possible to start your hikes from any of the lake towns such as Romanshorn or Rohrschach (please ask at the town information or tourist centres). For a quick day trip to the mountains, the closest one would be Mt Säntis as recommended by Slowpoke. This mountain is open all year and accessible by cable cars from Schwägalp. At the top, you’ll find the usual visitor facilities such as restaurants, gift shops and an observation/panorama deck. An alternative to Säntis is Hoher Kasten in Appenzell. The hiking trails on the mountain may be closed now but the the revolving restaurant and the viewing terrace are open all year. It’s best to check the live webcams before you visit.

A good rainy day activity in the area would be to visit the the Appenzell Show Dairy in Stein and the Maestrani Chocolarium in Flawil. You can get a combi ticket to visit both. Please check online.

I hope you will enjoy the rest of your trip in Switzerland and have a safe journey to Garmisch. By the way, best stick to the highway. It won’t be scenic the whole way, but there will be a few stretches scenic enough and you can always make a stop and visit the smaller towns along the way, if you have time.

Thank you all so much for your willingness to help us! We will do all suggestions, Santis this morning, the Flawil chocolate and Appenzell in Stein in the afternoon, and a stop in Bregenz tomorrow on the way to Garmisch, taking the highway and checking out a town or two along the way.
