Hello again Michelle
The Great Attraction of the Lavaux Vineyards
You need to have in front of you a detailed map of the area between Lausanne and the Vevey/Montreux district. The Lavaux vineyards are planted on the hills on the north side of Lake Geneva, looking across to the Mont Blanc ‘Massif’ of mountains on the south side of the lake.
I first saw the Lavaux vineyards in July 1972, when the Bern to Geneva express train I was travelling on came out of a short tunnel just after passing through Puidoux station. Wow! What a fantastic view! The next few minutes were shear magic as the train descended into Lausanne.
I have only a very limited interest in vineyards. Nowadays my age severely limits my hiking possibilities. For me (and I suspect many others) the great attraction of the Lavaux vineyards is the spectacular views.
Hike from Lutry to Cully?
This hike would be along, or close to, the shore of the lake (known locally as Lac Lėman). Not very good for enjoying the fantastic views!
Two Suggestions
These come from a man who has been travelling around Switzerland (as a tourist) ever since 1971. (Since 1972 I have always invested in what is nowadays called the ‘Swiss Travel Pass’.)

Take the R7 local train which runs from Vevey up to to Palezieux. Go only as far as Chexbres. Hike DOWN to the lakeside from Chexbres.
Take a local train from Lausanne heading along the main line to Puidoux, Palezieux and (eventually) Bern. Get off at Grandvaux. Hike down to the lake at Cully.
I am hoping that dedicated hikers and/or wine experts will have some further interesting suggestions!
Best wishes
Roger

Hi Michelle,
Lovely that you’ll be visiting the Lavaux vineyards! It’s such a beautiful region. In addition to Roger’s tips, here’s one hike Arno and I really enjoyed: https://www.myswissalps.com/blog/hike-lutry-epesses/

Wow, Im glad I asked that question. That hike looks perfect for us. A follow up question. We will be eating somewhere whether it be the start, middle or end of hike. Any favorite places to eat not far out of walking distances.
Thank you Michelle

Hi Michelle,
There are lots of small villages worth exploring within the Lavaux vineyards. The hike Annika suggested is a good one – about 6km, roughly 2 hours. Alternatively, you can also walk from Epesses to Rivaz or St. Saphorin, then take the train to Vevey or Montreux.
Best regards,
Anna
