Moderate day hikes from Winterthur

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip to Switzerland this May, staying in Winterthur, and wants to hike beautiful trails. They are looking for intermediate hikes that can be completed in a day, along with advice on getting to the hiking spots using public transport or rideshares. Since they anticipate travel times of 2 to 3 hours, they want to ensure they have enough time to return to the train station.

Key takeaways:
  • Use the SBB timetable to easily plan your hiking trips and check for trail options you can filter by region and difficulty level.
  • Consider hiking trails near Winterthur, such as Ebenalp, Seealpsee, Walensee, and Flumserberg, which are suitable for intermediate hikers and accessible by public transport.
  • Using buses is a viable option for reaching hiking destinations, while Uber may be less popular in remote areas.

Later this May I am visiting Switzerland in hopes of hiking some beautiful trails. When I visit, I will be staying in Winterthur. I will be taking trains and other modes of public transportation in order to travel around from place to place. I have realized that reaching most of these hiking destinations will take around 2 to 3 hours on train. With that in mind, what are some nice hikes that an intermediate hiker can complete in a day with enough time to make it back to the train station? Additionally, how can I reach the hiking destinations themselves after I have stopped at my desired location? Is Uber popular? Is using the bus also a viable option as well?

    Hi mread,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Hiking is very common in Switzerland so most trails are accessible by public transport or mountain transportation. You can plan your trips easily with the SBB timetable. The following link is a good resource to plan your hiking trips: http://www.myswissalps.com/hiking. Scroll down for trail options, which you can filter by regions and difficulty level.

If you’re staying in Winterthur during your trip, you might want to check out trails that are closer. Some options below:

    Ebenalp/ Seealpsee

    Walensee and Flumserberg

    Hope this gets you started.
