Cogwheel train from Pilatus to Alpnachstad

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is headed to Mt. Pilatus next Saturday and is trying to plan their day. They want to book a timed reservation for the cogwheel return trip to Alpnachstad after spending some time at the summit, where they plan to enjoy lunch and ride a toboggan. They're worried about crowds and seek advice on the best time to return.

Key takeaways:
  • Book your cogwheel return trip after lunch at the summit to avoid long queues.
  • Consider riding the cogwheel up first, then taking the cable car down after enjoying the slide.
  • Try to arrive early to enjoy the toboggan ride before it gets too crowded.

I’m traveling to Mt. Pilatus and would like to book a timed reservation for the cog wheel down so I could skip the queue, but I’m struggling to find the right time to book. I’ll be arriving to Frakmuntegg at 10am and plan to ride the toboggan. We’ll also likely get a bite to eat at some point, and plan to stay at the summit for about an hour. What would be the best time for the cog wheel return trip to Alpnachstad?

I’ll be there next Saturday – do you think it will be really crowded?

    Thank you!

If your plans are not already set, consider taking the cogwheel train up to the summit of Mt. Pilatus, spend some time there and perhaps have lunch there before going down on the cable car to get off and do the mountain slide.  After you ride the slide, then take the lift down to Kriens, and walk downhill into town to catch the bus back to Luzern.

I was thinking of taking the cable cars up so I could get to the slide when it opens to hopefully avoid a long queue and eliminate any chance of not making the slide, what would be the reasoning to take the cog wheel up? Thanks!
