New Bernina Express from Landquart to Tirano

Short summary – read this first

A traveler shares exciting news about the Bernina Express, which now includes a new route from Landquart to Tirano, adding about 45 kilometers. They are looking for advice on how to connect from Zurich to this route and whether it’s worth the trip compared to the original route starting from Chur.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the 07:07 IC3 train from Zurich to Chur for the best connection to Landquart and allow at least 10 minutes for transfers.
  • Consider that while the new route from Landquart is longer, some may find the original route from Chur more visually appealing due to fewer tree-covered areas.
  • The views at the Wiesner Viaduct are limited, so getting off the train to explore isn't possible on the Bernina Express.

However this is not as spectacular as the route from Chur via Tiefencastel to Filisur.

The Wiesen viaduct is one of the few open sections between Davos and Filisur – a lot of the line is in trees or tunnel. But even at the Wiesen viaduct you will only see a quick glimpse unless you get off the train and walk which you can’t do from the Bernina Express

Thanks Rockoyster! It makes an interesting route I think; longer than the default one from Chur. Possibly more interesting for passengers from Zurich if it connects well in Landquart.

Not much to choose as far as Zurich connection options go. 07:07 IC3 from Zurich to CHur stopping at Landquart is probably best for both options to ensure at least 10 mins allowance for connections.

See attached for joining BEX at (1) Landquart (2) Chur.

Interesting, in that case it’s almost a random pick. Both routes are good. I guess they both have to connect to the same buses to Lugano from Tirano, so timings are similar.
