No more car trains on Albula Line

Short summary – read this first

Wandermann started a thread to inform readers about the discontinued car train service on the Albula Line between Samedan and Thusis, which was popular for reaching the Engadin region. This service was ended due to low usage compared to the Vereina tunnel's efficiency. It's a loss for visitors looking for an enjoyable scenic drive with their vehicles.

Key takeaways:
  • The car train service on the Albula Line has been discontinued, so visitors should plan alternative transport options.
  • For scenic travel in the Engadin region, consider using the Vereina tunnel for efficient car transport.
  • Always check current travel services before your trip, as options may change over time.

This information will only be of interest for the few (?) readers of this forum who want to reach or leave the Engadin region of Graubünden by means of a car train.

It used to be possible to take your car with you on the Albula Line trains between Samedan and Thusis.

But the transport of cars along this line during one year was equal to the transport during one day through the Vereina tunnel between Klosters and Sagliains.
So, the Rhaetian Railway ended this service after the winter season 2010-2011. If you’re interested, see this link (it’s in German).

It’s understandable, but it’s a pity. It was fun to see your car standing on the last wagon when the train went through all the curves.
