No passport number on Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named BruceAlmight is visiting Zurich for 8 days and has bought an 8-day Swiss Travel Pass from Happyrail. He’s concerned because his pass doesn’t show a passport number and wonders if he needs to get it updated.

Key takeaways:
  • Contact Happyrail to confirm whether a passport number is required on your pass.
  • Carry an ID (like a passport) with your name and date of birth when using the Swiss Travel Pass, as it proves ownership.
  • Your Swiss Travel Pass is valid from the start date and does not need to be validated before use.

    Hello,

First of all, let me thank you guys for the excellent help and support you extend regarding all things Switzerland.

I’ll be landing in Zurich for an 8 day stay starting Sunday. After much research, I bought the 8 day Travel pass from Happyrail and received it via email. However, I dont see passport number mentioned on it. Do i need to get it updated ? I read through the forum and see some threads mentioning about a new system that should print the passport number at the bottom. Doesnt seem to be the case for me . Anything to be concerned?

It does show the full name and Date of Birth.

    Hi BrucyAlmight!

Just to make sure: did you get a regular Swiss Travel Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass) or a Swiss Travel Pass Flex (http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpassflex)? In case of a Swiss Travel Pass Flex, you probably only have a purchase receipt, allowing you to arrange for your free travel days online. It won’t include a passport number. The process is explained at http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpassflex/howt ouse.

A regular Swiss Travel Pass should indeed have a passport number on it. Are you sure you’re looking at the actual printable PDF pass and not the confirmation e-mail? If you’re unsure, please try to upload an attachment here so we can have a look at it.

Thanks Annika. I bought the Swiss Travel Pass ( consecutive days ). I did get the printable PDF. Attaching it here.

To clarify, my arrival date is today. I seem to have made a mistake in my original post that said original date as Sunday instead of Today

Hi BruceAlmight! You’re right, I can’t see any passport number either, but it should be there. I suggest you contact HappyRail to ask what should be done in this case: http://www.myswissalps.com/ab outus/partners/happyra il.

Thanks Annika. Let me check with them right away.

Oh, and as a side note, is there way to remove attachments retrospectively? Dont want it to be lying around 🙂

Hi BruceAlmight! Sure, I understand you’d rather have the attachment removed again. It’s done :-)!

    Hello BrucyAlmight,

I noticed that HappyRail responded to you and explained that the passport number is not required on the pass. This information is new to me, but it’s good news. I assume the staff can check passport numbers when scanning the QR code.

    Enjoy your trip!

We fly out on Thursday and will start our STP on Saturday. We bought our 8 day pass on Switzerland Travel Center and our passport #’s are not on our printed passes either. We anticipate that when we get tickets for Pilatus, our first use of the pass, they will validate the pass. But we saw where we should have our passports with us when we’re using the pass. Hope that helps. Janice

The Swiss Travel Pass does not require “validation”. It’s valid from the nominated start date for the duration of the Pass.

You need to carry id to prove you are the owner of the pass. A photo id (eg passport, drivers license) with your name and date of birth works.

You will not always be asked. Just show id if requested. Some train inspectors and ticket shop operators are fussier than others.

We bought a Swiss Rail Pass, consecutive 15 day, from “OTP Holidays LTD”. It only has the validity dates printed on it. No names, passport numbers etc. It has a line to write in our names and passport numbers. Is that all we need to do to validate it? Is that the way it works?

    Hi Ladkins1216,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! I don’t know OTP but I am guessing that they sent the pass via regular mail, not e-mail? If so, then this is an “old style” pass, but still in use (and valid). This type of pass needs to be filled out by yourself. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/sw isstravelpass/howtouse under “Printing and validating the pass”.

    Enjoy your trips!

Yes, it was sent via regular mail. I will fill it out per instructions.

    I have a couple other questions…

Our itinerary is as follows:Flying into Zurich and going straight to Lucerne for 3 days. What would you recommend doing in Lucerne?

Then to Bern for only 1 day, suggestions?

Then to Lauterbrunnen for 4 days. We are planning to visit Gimmelwald, Grindelwald, Wegen, Murren, Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg, Schilthorn, Jungfrau. We love to hike, but are older, 60-70s, so easier hikes are best. What easier/scenic hikes would yourecommend in these areas?

    And where is the”Honesty Shop”?

Then we head to Zermatt for 2 days. Suggestions for what to do in Zermatt if you only have 2 days.

We have purchased the Swiss Rail Pass for 15 days. So, we can visit places for the day, and jump on and off. We would love to take a boat ride.

We also love to visit castles. Are there any castles we could see around any of these places, or on route to any of these? We have read about the Spiez, between Bern and Lauterbrunnen. How far from Lauterbrunnen is it?

I have a question about adapters. Do we need a type C or type J, or both?

    Hi Meera2307

Each Swiss Travel Pass is delivered by email as a single sheet of paper PDF.

The ticket collector scans the QR code and may ask to see your passport.
