Hi everyone, I am trying to find a solution to get from martigny in Switzerland to Nürnberg in Germany via train. Ideally overnight in some sort of sleeper carriage or with reclining seat options. Has anyone done part of that route maybe over night before? I would be very grateful for any input and will continue to research in the meantime. Many thanks,

    Anna

    Hi Anna, welcome to MySwissAlps!

I’m not aware of any night trains on this route. You can travel at night, sort of, with at least one long layover somewhere en route in the middle of the night. So that’s not realistic and takes much longer than day travel. You can find all options in the timetable: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable.

No overnight trains run on the route. Overnight trains in western Europe have been decimated in the last 10 – 20 years, replaced by high speed trains, and cheap flights.

The problem is that Martigny – Nürnberg is nowhere near a high speed train route.

Fastest train journey I could find is a daytime journey of 8 hours 8 mins. This is possible 3 or 4 times a day with 4 changes:

    Martigny – Visp

    Visp – Bern

    Bern – Basel

    Basel – Karsruhe

    Karlsruhe – Nürnberg

    Hello Anna,

Another drawback to night travel is that you miss all of the scenery. I think it is best to do your travel during the day and look for an inexpensive place to stay overnight. By the way, why is the title of your string “Overnight train Geneva to Munich” ?

You could also do Martigny to Lausanne, and then Lausanne to Basel. Very scenic, but of course it all depends on what you will already have seen prior to your getting to Martigny.
