Cash or credit card for Swiss mountain transport?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is unsure about the payment methods at mountain transportation and restaurants in Switzerland and wants to know if credit cards are widely accepted. They are deciding how much cash to carry for their trip. Credit cards are accepted in tourist-heavy areas but having some cash is recommended for more remote spots.

Key takeaways:
  • Mountain trains and gondolas accept credit cards, while mountain restaurants at tourist locations generally do.
  • Always keep some cash handy for small purchases or at less busy mountain spots.
  • A debit card is usually sufficient, but cash can help in exceptional cases.

    Mtn trains, gondolas etc.: yes.

Mtn restaurants: At touristic locations (near top station of gondola, etc.) yes, along hiking trails (buvette d’alpage / Bergwirtschaft / agriturismo): no.

    Hi Pkerr,

You’ll rarely need cash with a debit card, but it’s recommend to keep some cash handy for the exceptional places. With a credit card, smaller amounts can be an issue so you would then need cash too. Please also see http://www.myswissalps.com/sw issfranc.
