Hi Ava T,
There’s plenty to see at the top of Schilthorn. If you have time and like the idea of dining in a revolving restaurant at a high altitude, then yes to dining at Piz Gloria . You probably need to book a table in advance if you’re visiting during lunchtime.
You can find more information about the facilities on Schilthorn here: http://www.myswissalps.com/schilthorn

Ava,
Having been there last year, the view carries the experience. The catch is that you have to make reservations, when you may not know what the weather/ visibility is likely to be. Know that there is a nice walk in cafeteria just below it and a large observation deck all around it. You might consider having lunch in the lovely carless village of Murren on the lift ride down, and pick your weather for the morning you decide to go up there.

That’s a great idea as another option if the visibility isn’t ideal. Do they also have a webcam we can check or would we only be able to find out once we are up there?

I would check the forecast in the shorter term when you plan to go. Understand that you have better odds in the morning than the afternoon, as that tends to be when the clouds move it. You might try enjoying raclette and a beer in Murren!!

Last June (25th), I arrived at the Schilthorn mid-morning and went straight to the host at the podium in the restaurant to ask if I could book a lunch reservation and requested window seats. He was able to accommodate the two of us at 12:30 p.m. so that gave us a couple of hours to enjoy the other activities at the top, take photos, watch the film, etc. We returned to the podium about 10 minutes before our reservation and were soon seated. After we’d ordered, some other people were seated at the table with us, so you probably won’t have the entire table to yourself (seats 8), but we enjoyed our window seats and chatting with those seated with us.
They also serve breakfast there if you want to head up extra early. I recall many years ago when staying at the Hotel Alpenruh in Murren, that you could opt for one breakfast at the Schilthorn, including transportation. I believe it is offered as part of a package now.
On the way down last June, we stopped at Birg and did the “Thrill Walk” after taking photos from the sun terrace/Skyline Walk, before continuing on back down to Murren.

Hi Ava T,
Most hotels in the area have live-cams for the local mountain tops so you can check before heading up and out. It’s best not to buy mountaintop tickets until the day of, after checking out these cams.
As far as restaurants are concerned, that’s a very ambiguous question, as every person’s palate is different. I feel the Swiss cuisine is very under rated, as if flies under the radar in comparison to all of the scenery, trains, cheese, chocolate, watches, etc. That being said, I didn’t have one bad meal in my two weeks there. The country is surrounded by at least two of the most popular cuisines in the world, French and Italian. Throw German food in for good will and you can’t go wrong as far as I’m concerned. I believe one can walk into pretty much any place and have some good food. True, some restaurants may be better others, but it’s basically just a matter of one’s opinion. So don’t be afraid to walk into any local restaurant and have something. Have fun on you journey.

Hi, Ava, we ate at Piz Gloria with no reservations and were lucky to get seats at the window. There was a buffet available, but we ordered the veal and rosti from the menu and it was delicious. The ambience was wonderful as the restaurant slowly revolved with clear visibility of the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau peaks. We enjoyed the James Bond exhibit very much also! Going up to the Schilthorn was a spectacular experience with breathtaking 360 degree views!
Don’t miss it! The whole trip upward is exhilarating to say the least! Be sure to check the weather & webcam before your excursion though. On the way back down at Murren, we hiked to Gimmelwald (further than anticipated) and then got on cable car to Stechelberg, where we caught a bus to the impressive Trummelbach Falls. Have a wonderful trip!!
