River cruise Amsterdam to Basel.Purchase 4 day STP prior to trip.
Day 1 – Basel to Zermatt
Day 2 – Gornergrat in Zermatt

Hi Brad,
Thanks for sharing your itinerary. Great planning with the Swiss Travel Pass! On Day 5, I think you’re looking at the Saver Day Pass. Make sure you book that well in advance.
Swiss Travel Pass: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/
Saver Day Pass: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/saver-day-pass/You will also need additional ticket for the train journey from the Swiss border to Salzburg: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/austria-switzerland/

Reply 2 of 10 • 15 April 2026 at 0:22:25 #2796264Thank you so much Anna for the quick response, information and confirmation of my plans!  Now if it’s not too much trouble, could you please check my facts and review, and make any suggestions for our 2 days in Wengen?
Plan on arriving before noon. Drop off luggage at hotel in Wengen. Visit Interlaken and lake Brienz tour for half day.
2nd day – get up early and travel from Wengen to Grindelwald via STP. Use STP for half off gondola to Grindelwald First. Do the cliff walk(free). First Flyer(ticket fee), First Glider (ticket fee), and trottibike (ticket fee)down. Then back down to Lauterbrunnen to visit and dinner then back to Wengen hotel.
3rd day – wake up early and travel to Lauterbrunnen to catch train to Buchs then Salzburg Austria.
Where/when do we purchase tickets for the activities? Â Also, you said to purchase the Swiss Saver day pass for our trip to Buchs. I will definitely take your advice on that, but just curious why? Â Do they sell out?
Thank you again for your help!

Give yourself more time in the Lake Brienz area
Referring to your original itinerary in your thread, you are (on day three) travelling from Zermatt to Wengen. That journey will involve changing at Visp, Spiez, Interlaken Ost and Lauterbrunnen. In your reply two it seems that you are now planning to go to Wengen first, and then head back to Interlaken!
You will give yourselves roughly two more hours in the beautiful Lake Brienz area if you travel as follows:
Travel from Zermatt to Interlaken OST.
Park your luggage in a locker(s) at Interlaken Ost.
Explore Lake Brienz using boat, train and perhaps bus. Your Swiss Travel Passes are (of course) valid on all three modes of transport.
Retrieve your luggage from the locker(s).
Carry on to Wengen via Lauterbrunnen.
Check in at Wengen.Best wishes for your detailed planning.
Roger

Yes, Saver Day Passes do sell out, and they get pretty expensive (much more expensive than a Swiss Travel Pass day) if you buy late. Anna’s link provides all the details.
On your way to Austria, you’d normally not literally travel to Buchs. That’s just a pass-through town and the last point of validity for the Swiss Travel Pass. In your case, you’d board the train to Austria in Zurich. The timetable gives you exact details if you enter your Wengen to Salzburg trip.
You’ll find links to activity tickets on all our pages, like https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/grindelwald-first/

Reply 7 of 10 • 15 April 2026 at 18:59:47 #2796279Hello Brad,
If you can spare 2 to 3 hours or so at Lauterbrunnen, I would suggest a visit to the Trummelbach Falls. Bus No. 141 (Direction Stechelberg, Hotel) takes 7 minutes from the Lauterbrunnen Station to the Falls, and you would have to walk for around 5 to 7 minutes to reach the ticket office. Please take the funicular straight to Level 5, and then walk up the stairs from Level 6 to 10. This funicular operates every 10 minutes. The water thundering down from the glaciers right inside the mountain will leave you spellbound. You will naturally have many great photo opportunities here. If you are short on time, you may descend from Level 5 down to the base by the funicular, as the views from Level 5 down (by the stairs) are lacklustre in comparison with what you will see from Level 6 up. You have to be a bit cautious though because of dripping water at some stages which renders the areas a bit slippery.

Reply 8 of 10 • 16 April 2026 at 23:17:08 #2796294So sorry, I have one more question please?  Can you tell me if it would be more beneficial for me to purchase the Swiss Saver Day pass for the first day of our journey from Basil to Zermatt. Then use the 4 day STP for the remainder of our trip so then I can use day 4 of the STP on our journey from Wengen to Salzburg instead of the SSD pass. (Itinerary is at the start of this thread)?  Or is there no difference?  Thanks for your patience with me!
Reply 9 of 10 • 17 April 2026 at 10:20:10 #2796298Hello Brad,
Whether you buy a Saver Day Pass for the first day of your travel from Basel to Zermatt, or on the last day from Wengen to Buchs SG should make no difference. In any case you would have to buy a separate ticket for the journey from Buchs SG to your destination in Austria. As long as you have either your STP or the SDP with you, you could continue your journey on the same train without alighting at Buchs SG. You will enjoy this convenience irrespective of the type of Pass that you have (i.e. STP or SDP). You may like to note that you will have the freedom to travel by any mode of transport (except on some of the mountain routes) on a given date with either a SDP or a STP.
Right now the price of a Saver Day Pass in September is CHF 52/88 (Second / First Class). This price could go up as you approach closer to the date of your travel. Hence it is adviseable to decide the date and buy your SDP as early as possible.
I hope I have understood your concern correctly. If not, you may please elaborate further.

Reply 10 of 10 • 17 April 2026 at 21:19:17 #2796304Hi Brad,
You can already check the Saver Day Pass availability online. I would check for both days (Day 1 and Day 5) and purchase whichever is available and cheaper. Then proceed with buying the Swiss Travel Pass.
Tickets for the adventure activities on Grindelwald First can be purchased online from the official website. Combo tickets are also available (gondola + adventure tickets). You can also buy directly from the ticket counter but on busy days you might have to wait in line. Further information is available here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/grindelwald-first/

Anna
