Purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass via SBB app?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named James is preparing for a trip to Switzerland in three weeks and is having trouble purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass through the SBB App. He seeks advice on how to buy the pass, especially since he worries ticket offices will be closed upon his late arrival in Zurich.

Key takeaways:
  • You can purchase the Swiss Travel Pass online from the official SBB tourist webshop for a quick digital delivery.
  • If you're unable to buy through the SBB App, consider creating an account on the SBB website to access your pass there.
  • For a late arrival, buying the Swiss Travel Pass online ensures you have it ready upon arrival without needing to visit a ticket office.

    Hi fionatravel,

Typically no, reservations are not necessary but if you see that the train is expecting a high occupancy (via the SBB timetable), yes it would make sense to make a reservation. You can read about GoldenPass reservations in the below link:

In regard to upgrading, you can do this at the rail station, at a ticket machine or online. You can also do it on board but personally I’d rather do it prior to boarding.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

I just keep it simple buy the 1/2 fare card directly from Swiss visit center website you guys provided and deal with keep it in my app account later ( or just forget about it )

I like yo keep my credit card information in my account so I can buy ticket easily and easy ride is my 1/2 fare card prices so just click and it goes to my credit cards to process payment !

I am able to input my credit card information in my SBB app though but not on a desk too SBB. Ch website ! Same as edit my account information-

    thack you

    I understand fionatravel.

I am pretty sure there is a “Payment method” section on the website, where you can add your card details when you click on your “Profile”.

Just a note on Easy Ride, yes that’s right an appropriate payment (credit card) will need to be stored in the app which will deduct the days’ travel costs. A receipt will be emailed to you, normally the next morning. You may want to check in with SBB to see which foreign credit cards are accepted.

Also is remembering to swipe in/out in a timely manner. It is up to you as the passenger to have a valid ticket for each journey. For example the train left at 9.07 and you only swiped in at 9.08. if an inspector asks and sees that you boarded the train one minute late. You effectively did not have a valid ticket, you could be penalised. Similarly, forgetting to swipe out, could lead to unnecessary charges.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hello forum tolks,

I must admit that after reading the posts on this one, it makes me a bit glad that I am such a computer nerd/geek, etc. I have personally found it pretty amusing reading all the different opinions, all the different ways of trying to buy tickets, rail passes, etc, only to find that one or maybe even two posts have actually made it work. Most seemingly by the experts. That being said, more power to those who are able to complete so much online. I am niether criticizing, nor am I judging those with the ability to do things online. Again, I simply don’t possess that ability to do so. But what I have found out, though (and this is the humorous part to me), is that it took me less time to go to the SBB office at the Zurich airport (about 35 min, due to some family issues at home and not able to do these things online) to be able to get a Swiss Travel Pass, exchange $1000.00 into Chf, and send my big-bag to Zermatt, than it took me to read all these posts. Enjoy your trip everybody.

    Regards,

    Danielsan

    I see ! Thanks !

I am able to add my credit card in my SBB app ! ( not the desk too SBB website) So it’s all set ! Thanks for the reminder about easy ride , and I don’t have to use it actually as I only have a few point to point ticket and I will have BO pass and will use Ticino card while in the region ! Same as when in Montreux by using guest card

    Hi fionatravel,

Good to hear all is now organised. Now the fun part, is to enjoy the trip!

For your point to point tickets you mention, if they are longer journeys, it may be worth considering a Saver Day Pass, they can be quite reasonably priced and will be discounted with your Swiss Half Fare Card.

    Have fun.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
