Should I buy a 24h all zones ZVV pass or 6 or 7 zones is sufficient?

Short summary – read this first

Raghu D is planning a trip starting Saturday, arriving in Zurich on Friday night and wants to visit Stein am Rhein and Schloss Laufen am Rhein Falls using the ZVV 24-hour ticket. They are unsure if this ticket will cover their planned sites, especially given their locations.

Key takeaways:
  • Buy an all zones ZVV 24-hour ticket for unlimited travel on public transport in the Zurich area.
  • Travel from Zurich to Winterthur, then take a local train to Schloss Laufen for the falls.
  • After visiting the falls, return to Winterthur and then head to Rapperswil for a charming town experience.
  • Use either boats or the S7 train to get back to Zurich after exploring Rapperswil.

    Hello Raghu

Firstly, thank you for your very kind words at beginning of this thread.

Sorry, but I have some disappointing news.  The answer to the question in your last sentence is NO!  But read on.

The Zurich Verkehrs Verbunnd {‘ZVV’) organises local public transport in the whole of Canton Zurich.  It organises the timetables, and sets the fares.  But subject to two exceptions, the area of the ZVV is identical to that of the canton of Zurich.  The two exceptions are both at the eastern end of Lake Zurich.  Rapperswil in Saint Gallen Canton and Pfaffikon in Schwyz Canton are included in the ZVV area.

An all zones 24-hour ticket for the ZVV gives you unlimited travel on all public transport in the ZVV area.  That is all trains, trams, buses and boats in the area, including the intercity trains between Zurich Hauptbahnhof, Zurich Airport and Winterthur.

You will see from the zones map that Schloss Laufen am Rheinfalls is WITHIN THE ZVV.  That is because it is within Zurich Canton!  (The Rhine at this point forms the boundary between Zurich Canton and Schaffhausen Canton.)

New Suggestion for this coming Saturday.  Buy an all zones ZVV 24-hour ticket.  Travel from Zurich to Winterthur by ANY train.  (There are loads of them!)  Go from Winterthur to Schloss Laufen on a local train.  (They run twice an hour.  But note that trains numbered S24 run through Schloss Laufen without stopping.)

When you have had your fill with the Rhine Falls, return to Winterthur.  From there, catch the S26 train bound for Ruti.  THe S26 runs every half hour, and through some wonderful countryside.  At Ruti change to the S5 train heading for Pfaffikon (SZ), but get off at Rapperswil (SG), an attractive town which is a mix of old and new.

There are boats from Rapperswil to Zurich at 15 40  and 17 45. They take about 2 hrs and 15 mins.  If the boat is not convenient, take the S7 train which runs every 30 minutes along the North Shore of Lake Zurich.  The S7s depart at 09 and 39  past each hour, and take about 40 minutes to get back to Zurich.

    Best wishes for your travels.

    Roger

    Hi Raghu D,

Ditto, thank you for your kind words.

Sound advice from Roger.  Rapperswil is nice suggestion, I was only just recommending a friend to visit Rapperswil earlier this week :-), though Stein am Rhein is very lovely too, so if you do make it – enjoy.

All about a visit to Rhine Falls is explained here:

and additional information regarding the ZVV network in our Zurich travel guide below, scroll to “The ZVV fare network”:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
