Regular trains vs Bernina Express from Tirano

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Rodger ajero wants to know if the train views from Tirano to St. Moritz are similar to the ones on the Bernina Express. He’s curious about the scenic experience on regular trains and whether they differ significantly from the express service.

Key takeaways:
  • The views on regular trains are almost the same as those on the Bernina Express, with minor differences if you look through the panoramic windows.
  • Local trains are usually cheaper since they don’t require a reservation fee, unlike the Bernina Express.
  • If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you don’t need to buy a ticket for the Bernina Express, just a seat reservation.

exactly the same views, except if you bend your neck you might see a few extra bits of mountainside through the ‘toplight’ windows of the Bernina Express carriages

    Hi Asimm76,

you can check the prices in the timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. You will need a seat reservation on Bernina Express (http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress/tickets). If you have a rail pass like the Swiss Travel Pass you do not need to buy ticket, just a seat reservation. You do not need the seat reservation on local trains just on the Bernina Express.

‘Local trains’ are cheaper as you don’t pay the extra reservation fee.

In any case on slow steeply graded single-track mountain lines like the Bernina, local trains are not much slower than ‘express’ trains

The benefits of the ‘panoramic’ coaches are open to debate. It hardly matters if you don’t go in a ‘panoramic’ coach as most Swiss trains have large windows, even if not officially panoramic. The key element of a ‘panoramic’ coach is ‘toplight’ windows above your head but in practice very few of the major views from panoramic trains are directly above your head, so the view through the normal side part of windows is normally fine.
