Renting a motorbike with sidecar in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

Vishal, from India, is planning a trip to Switzerland in May and is considering renting a motorbike with a sidecar due to luggage constraints. He seeks advice on the ease of renting such a vehicle and the safety of riding a motorcycle in the Swiss mountains.

Key takeaways:
  • Renting a motorbike with a sidecar may be challenging; check local rental services for availability.
  • Swiss roads are generally safe, but mountain roads can be very curvy and challenging; consider your riding skills before proceeding.
  • Using the Swiss travel system, including trains and other public transport, is highly recommended for stress-free travel, especially with luggage.

    Hi All,

I am from India and will be visiting the lovely country Switzerland in May. I have a driving license but only for 2 wheeler so I am thinking on renting one. But since we will be having luggage too(2 suitcases and 2 bags) therefore we will need a sidecar model motorbike. So can someone help me with below questions:

    1. How easy is it to get a motorbike on rent with sidecar?

    2. Is it advisable to ride a motorcycle on swiss mountains in terms of safety?

Thanx a lot for your help.

    Regards, Vishal

    Hi Vishalsonkar,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

An interesting idea you have for transportation. As I am not a motorbike girl myself I cannot really say if it is possible to rent such a vehicle, maybe another forum member has more personal experience to share here.

Generally speaking Swiss roads are in a good state and safe, but mountain roads are very curvy and not always easy to drive. This of course is very individual.

To find out about the differences of travelling on road or by train, which is also a wonderful option to explore Switzerland, use this link: http://www.myswissalps.com/ca rversustrain

Hope you’ll get some more helpful input from the forum.

    Best,
    Steph

    Hi Vishal

I googled your question and the following website came up. http://www.kochadv.ch. I have no personal knowledge of this website and, in any case, would not choose or recommend this mode of transport in Switzerland even when we were younger.

When we first went to Switzerland for a week with our children, some 30 years ago, we hired a car. We stayed in Wilderswil and actually only used the car to drive to Ammerswil to visit a friend and for the journey from the airport and back. I cannot remember which Pass we had, but we travelled the extensive rail, cable car, boat, bus and cog railway network in the Jungfrau region with the children travelling free. We realised that hiring the car was a mistake and that we should have used the rail system instead and have visited Switzerland on numerous occasions since, winter and summer, and always used the trains.

    Hope this helps.

    Jane
