Wengen-Kleine Scheidegg-Grindelwald with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Jake Mulhern and his wife are planning a trip to Wengen in the next few weeks. They want to take the gondola from Wengen to Männlichen, hike to Klein Scheidegg, and then travel to Grindelwald, but they're unsure about train prices and whether they need to book tickets in advance. They're specifically interested in how much their Swiss Travel Pass will help with the train fare.

Key takeaways:

You can enjoy a 50% discount on the gondola from Wengen to Männlichen and a free hike from Männlichen to Klein Scheidegg. The train from Klein Scheidegg to Grindelwald offers a 25% discount with the Swiss Travel Pass. If you want free travel to Grindelwald, consider getting the Berner Oberland Pass or Jungfrau Travel Pass instead. Make sure to check the weather before buying tickets, as you can board trains without reservations unless going to Jungfraujoch.

I know this has been discussed in other forums but I’ve seen differing information and wanted to clarify some things.  My wife and I will be staying in Wengen for a few days and wanted to do a day where we take the Gondola from Wengen to Mannlichen and from there hike to Klein Scheidegg.  I understand that leg of the trip completely thanks to some helpful forums here, however I am not certain I have the right information to get from Klein Scheidegg to Grindlewald.

We have the Swiss Travel Pass so I was wondering which train from Klein Scheidegg to Grindlewald would give us the cheapest deal.  Is there any train from Klein Scheidegg to Grindlewald that is free with this pass or is it just 25%?  I’ve seen that it is probably 25% off but can’t find a direct link to the correct train to check what the price would be.

Additionally, is it recommended at this time of year, we are leaving in about 2-3 weeks, to book any of these tickets early or can we check weather and decide on the best day to go?  Again, I know some of this has been answered elsewhere but we want to make sure we know the exact trains to take in the cheapest way possible prior to arriving and I want to make sure the information is all still up to date!

Thank you for confirming all of this!  This is very clearly laid out.  I was unable to find the train that would be free online.  I’ve looked up the train from Kleine Scheidegg on here and on Google and I get the one that we get 25% off for.  Would you by chance know the name of that line or have any details on that train specifically?

    Hi again,

I have a correction to make. The journey from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen is not free. With the Swiss Travel Pass however you will get a 25% discount. The journey from Wengen onwards via Lauterbrunnen and Zweilutschinen is free. I have edited my previous post.

At Kleine Scheidegg train station, you will only see trains going to Jungfraujoch, Grindelwald or Wengen/Lauterbrunnen. Take the one heading to Wengen/Lauterbrunnen.

    Regards,

    Anna

So it sounds like there’s no Free (With the pass) train to Grindlewald.  We would have to get the one back to Wengen/Lauterbrunnen and then from there go to Grindlewald?  Sorry, I might be a little confused on this.

    Hi Jake,

    >>> We have the Swiss Travel Pass so I was wondering which train from Klein Scheidegg to Grindlewald would give us the cheapest deal. Is there any train from Klein Scheidegg to Grindlewald that is free with this pass or is it just 25%?

It’s not a question of which train from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald will give you the best deal, but which pass.

There is only one direct train from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald. How much it costs you depends on which pass you have. A Swiss Travel Pass will give you 25% discount, but the trip is free with a Berner Oberland Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/berner-oberland-pass/) or a Jungfrau Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/jungfrau-travel-pass/).

    >>> I’ve seen that it is probably 25% off but can’t find a direct link to the correct train to check what the price would be.

You can find the price list here:

    https://www.jungfrau.ch/en-gb/prices-and-brochures/

The above price list gives you the full price. The Swiss Travel Pass validity map tells you how much of a discount you will get with that pass:

    https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/

If you aren’t familiar with the transport routes in the Jungfrau Region, this map might assist:

    https://media.jungfrau.ch/image/upload/fl_lossy,q_auto/c_scale,w_1394/v1708949817/Map-Sommer-2024-Jungfrau-Travel-Pass.jpg

It is actually a map of the area of validity of the Jungfrau Travel Pass, but illustrates the travel routes well.

    >>> Additionally, is it recommended at this time of year, we are leaving in about 2-3 weeks, to book any of these tickets early or can we check weather and decide on the best day to go?

It’s not possible to reserve seats on any of the trains in the Jungfrau Region except for the one from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch.

As you will be there during peak season, you will have the best chance of getting a good seat if you are ready to board the Grindelwald train at Kleine Scheidegg as soon as it arrives, after allowing the arriving passengers to alight of course!

    >>> So it sounds like there’s no Free (With the pass) train to Grindlewald.

Correct. To get a free ride from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald you need a Berner Oberland Pass or a Jungfrau Travel Pass.

    >>> We would have to get the one back to Wengen/Lauterbrunnen and then from there go to Grindlewald? Sorry, I might be a little confused on this.

The train from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen is not free with the Swiss Travel Pass either, but is discounted 25%.

The trip from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald via Wengen, Lauterbrunnen and Zweilütschinen (a very long way round) is free from Wengen onwards, but first you have to pay to get to Wengen.

You will see from the price list that the fare from Kleine Scheidegg to Wengen is marginally cheaper than the fare from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald.  However, you would have to decide whether that small saving is worth the longer travel time on a more convoluted route – not to mention that you would miss out on the scenery from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald, which is spectacular but quite different from the scenery between Wengen and Kleine Scheidegg.

I hope this clarifies things for you!

Thank you!  I don’t think that could be any clearer.  This absolutely helps us figure out our plans for the days we are in Wengen.
