Purchasing Swiss Travel from the SBB website or Swiss Railways?

Short summary – read this first

Wig is planning to purchase a Swiss Travel Pass for their trip and wants to know the best website to buy it from. They are confused between the SBB.ch site and swissrailways.com, and also have questions about ticket discounts on the SBB app.

Key takeaways:

Buy the Swiss Travel Pass from swissrailways.com for the best experience and a quick e-mail delivery of the PDF document. The SBB app primarily focuses on Swiss citizens, so you may not see all discounts available to pass holders there. Once you have the Swiss Travel Pass as a PDF, you don't need to link it to any app; just keep it handy for your travels.

Arno’s new YT video few hours ago lists 1st option to buy Swiss Travel Pass is to buy it from Swiss Federal Railways and of course we want a digital copy that we perhaps can store on our SBB app?
But, then, there is the SBB.Ch website which if I am not mistaken is the official Swiss travel pass website, but, there is another which is swissrailways.com which says they are the original site for Swiss Travel Pass?
Which of these 2 should I use?
On the other hand swissrailways.com, sells a lot of mountain excursions, Pilatus etc, your blog has a lot of swissrailways.com, I assume they are a reliable site to purchase excursions?

These tickets cost a lot of money. Want to make sure I purchase it from the right vendor

    Thanks

    Wig

    Hi Wig,

Swiss Railways and SBB are both the same company. SBB is the acronym for its German name – Schweizerische Bundesbahnen (SBB). Swiss Railways is their official webshop for tourists and it’s the best place to buy the Swiss Travel Pass from.

Thanks Anna. I have another question.

On the SBB app, I looked for a round trip from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald on the scenic Wengernalp bahn, rather than through Wilderswill,  trains have to be switched at Kleine Scheidegg to CC 64 to Grindelwald.

SBB which sells the Swiss travel pass, but, I do not see a Swiss travel pass discount on the app to purchase tickets, but, rather only a half fare and GA discount, the latter is for citizens I believe?

I have not purchased the Swiss travel pass yet, but, after that, perhaps the SBB discount for Wengernalp Bahn will be visible on the SBB app?

    Thanks again Wig

    Hi Wig,

The SBB app is geared toward Swiss citizens. So you’ll mostly find citizen passes like GA in there. You can buy your ticket from the station. The SBB app is handy for train schedules but as a Swiss Travel Pass holder you do not need it for tickets. As Anna said, the Swiss Travel Pass can best be purchased from the SBB tourist webshop, which is SwissRailways.com. They’ll e-mail the PDF-document in minutes, and that’s all you need (no app is needed, no e-wallet, nothing else). They also sell various cable car tickets, with Swiss Travel Pass discounts.

    Enjoy your trips!

    Sorry Anna / Arno:

If I purchase the Swiss travel pass through swissrailways.com, will it show up in my SBB app? Or do I have to link it? I got Arno’s point about the emailed PDF document. But, if it does show up in my SBB app I can use that as well to show the conductor?

    Thanks

    Hi Wig,

There’s nothing else you need to do once you have received the Swiss Travel Pass via e-mail. It’s a PDF document, just like any PDF document someone would e-mail you. You don’t need an app and you don’t need to link it to anything. It’s quick and easy!

For details, please see “How does the Swiss Travel Pass work” on the Swiss Travel Pass page: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/

    Enjoy!
