Thank you Yolanda for your help.
I have looked at your options and I am interested in the gotthard express.
Do you know if you can travel with suitcases on this train?
Also, does it have a first class option and if so what is the best way to buy tickets?
Kind regards
Clare

Thank you Anna, that was very helpful. Can the luggage be taken on the boat – the 1st leg of the trip?

Hello Clare,
There will certainly be areas where you can put your luggage somewhere. Just ask when you board. Most boats will have gangplanks to roll your cases onto, so that should make it a little more convenient for you.

Yolanda

Hi Clare! Just in case you’re interested: there is a free luggage service for passengers on the Gotthard Panorama Express. See the paragraph “Luggage transportation service” at http://www.myswissalps.com/gotthardpanoramaexpress.

Hi Clare,
When you board the boat portion of the Gotthard, you will be guided to a section where everyone who has it, puts it. At first it’s very crowded, but it thins out as the cruise goes along, as here are many stops along the way. By the time I arrived Fluelen, (this was in September) there were very little passengers left on board. Just keep your eyes on the luggage as you’re moving about, sitting, taking photos, etc. You’ll be fine. The boat takes off from platform one, which is the first one on the left, directly opposite the train station, near the “Wilkommen in Luzern” arch thas a clock in it. Have a great trip.

Dsnielsan

From Zurich you can go the so called scenic route over the old Victorian era Gotthard railway just by getting on the Treno Gottardo train at Zurich HB (runs direct every 2 hours). The train goes to Locarno where you can take a break at the lovely lake side before continuing by local train to Lugano and beyond
